Matchmaking is set up so that long term everyone should be winning about half of their matches. The only reward for playing well is the potential for better crystal income than your GP peers.

Competitive matchmaking was dead the day they abandoned matching by GP.

If they had kept GP-based matchmaking then players like me who routinely finished a season 11-1 or 12-0 would be raking in the crystals while players on the other end of the spectrum would be making very little.

On what basis is this - 12-0? Sooner or later, you will end up with an equal opponent or a more skilled one. The opponent who is weaker in skill will learn to play from you, you will work on your mistakes if you get to the strongest. But only the starting conditions are the same for everyone. This is fair and right.

I believe you misunderstood Rath_Tarr's comment about the 12-0 players.

The current system is less entertaining/fun for me personally but it still has the competition aspect. It's a matter of reaching your 50/50 point in the best league/division possible - which makes sense.
