Just to clarify, you are talking about the TCW version, not the one from Rebels, right? I don't agree with you either way, but this way I could at least see your point.
In Rebels he's just gotten old. Same Hondo, but now he's not actually physically capable of being the pirate we all know and love.*
*I perfectly understand if you hate him lol. I always groaned whenever he showed up in CW but I eventually realized that I actually enjoyed the episodes he was in.
