Luke having highjacked Red 5 after Hoth to run a personal errand while he was trusted the ship by the Rebel Alliance, making him the pilot would only encourage this kind of selfish behavior. On top of that, he has the habit to park it in swamps or oceans. That’s not how you treat a ship you borrowed.
