Some of us did. I was highly suspicious when they first appeared, and then as soon as they hit shipments, all my crystals went to veteran shards for weeks and weeks at the expense of everything else. I was making great progress by the time they became farmable in the cantina.
I bought the initial bundle when they first came out three months ago; I think it was $20. Then at the end, I spent another $20 on crystals to buy the final shards because I was sick of making them my priority for so long and just wanted it to be over. So $40 total over three months since they were introduced to the game. Whales spend hundreds on 1299 crystal packs with 5 shards each. I didn’t buy a single one of those, and have never bought a new character that way.
Right now, the only way to get Unmasked Kylo and SF TIE Pilot are the 1299 crystal packs, which I won’t buy. When the FO capital ship with Hux or Snoke is released, I won’t have the new characters ready. I’ll start buying their shards when they are added to the store, because I suspect that’s their plan. But I won’t wait for confirmation before I start preparing.
