Great job. You can use google, and also know how to ignore most of what it says. Like the fact that most videos pay nothing, and that in actual practice maybe a million views makes 2 grand, and then the YouTubers only get a percentage of that.
I'm sure CG has done something to 'ease the burden' on these folks doing free ads for their game. And it's a tiny minority of people making a few bucks at this, let alone a 6 figure income.
Man, all of the reports on AdSense CPM show that the people you're talking about in that lower bracket don't have advertisements.
AhnaldT does. Indisputably.
He also has a decent amount of subscribers, at 53k, which then drives higher calibre/higher paying advertisers to your videos.
The split is reported to be between 55-68% of the revenue going to the video's publisher, with 32-45% being retained by AdSense (YouTube/Google).
The average CPM I quoted is extremely likely to be considerably lower than the CPM achieved with these actual numbers.
The only other factor is Adblockers or people skipping the ads, it takes 30 seconds to qualify for payment. Even if only 15% of people watch enough of the advertisement it still works out to $27 per 1,000 views. Which when multiplied by the same factors as before, 100-150 x for the amount of views: $270 - $405 per video. x 4 per week = $1,620 per week. x 4 per month = $6,480 per month, at just 15% of views qualifying for AdSense.
Still plenty to cover a 3 day trip. Still plenty to make it a full time enterprise.
It's only become a small percentage of people because the market has now become saturated with people trying to get onboard a boat that already sailed.
6 billion hours per month watched. The more publishers that gets split between, the lower everyone earns, especially newcomers.
Established people with subscribers in the 10s of thousands, with over 100k views repeatedly for over a year, are an attractive advertisement prospect.
People who don't have these figures like, I expect, your friends that you mentioned, will not have any chance of achieving this, unless they can gain similar figures of views and subscribers.
You may, or may not, also be aware that advertisers are often going directly to the video publishers now and paying them to make the video, instead of worrying about Google taking cut via AdSense.
You are seriously behind the times if you genuinely believe that the main swgoh YouTube accounts are not earning a very tidy living out of it.
I know that what a person can theoretically make, and what actually happens is far different. Videos get arbitrarily demonized quite a bit. And quite a few of the people on this trip (all probably) are making way, way less at it than Ahnaldt101.
Last year Mobile Gamer actually said he was just making enough to cover his medical insurance most months. Except during the Addpocalypse when they all talked openly about making nothing during that time. I'm well aware that a VERY small number of people make a ton of money at it, and a slightly larger number make a good living. But most people barely break even. If you honestly believe that it's that easy to make money that way, then you are you doing it?
And that's entirely besides the original point which is that having all of them there in person is a big, hairy deal, and they don't do that casually unless there is a big chunk of content headed our way.
