I started an account on Android and was able to associate the game with a new device when I got an iPad.
I don't know if you can go back and forth on an everyday basis, but if you start with Android, then add a specific iOS device, you might be able to then use that one iOS device + any Android device that you've logged on using GooglePlay.
Otherwise, I think you might have to go back and forth between devices, adding each one as "new" every time you wanted to switch back and forth between iOS & Android.
Again, I don't know if that's how it works. I think it's probably NOT how it works. I think you should only have to use the "link device" once for each separate iOS device.
But basically, even if you only have to go through the "link a new device" thing once for each iOS device, the answer to your question should be,

Yes. You can play using both Android and iOS, but we make it very cumbersome and by making it difficult, we are effectively discouraging it.
