It's only more expensive if you used Fleet currency to buy gear, which almost no one did (for good reason, aside from characters and ships, most people would rather spend it on zeta mats). This way we get to use garbage currency like arena, GW, as well as excess shards from running Galactic War or opening Bronzium/Chromium directly into something useful.
