I spend money and have no clue what a whale or a dolphin typically spends. I could spend more and agree with OP in one point: if I spent more money the game would become pointless over the next few months.
For me it is about having fun. We need more game modes, yes. And I would enjoy tournaments or other versions of GW-like content. But I would also be glad about some training arena - fight just for the fun of winning or losing. No rewards, just a feature that lets me arrange an opponent squad and adjust their power level between cannonfodder and unbeatable.
CG could add new difficulty levels to LS/DS campaign mode and give new opportunities to farm gear. Maybe add shards for ships or toons later. All this sounds easy and I wonder why they just keep releasing new stuff and don't announce some major update.
And at this point we could talk about whales. If whales buy just everything even if they are bored how should the guys at CG get hard facts that something needs to change? In my job I would not change a thing as long as there is no evidence to justify and promote such an idea.
