I agree with the above poster. Spend money or time. The issue lies with those individuals who want to do neither. I have been playing for 5 or so months and was where you were at with my squad.
I set goals and worked towards them. If I couldn't get a character in one of the events then that was fine, I just continued on my goals until I could get them. I now have a 7 star Thrawn, R2, emperor and yoda. I will be ready for CLS next time and now working on first order so that I can get BB8. I know I won't get Rey the first time and I am ok with that.
