This person knows that they are doing - goal setting and hard work. If you don't want to spend money (and I don't) these two things will let you compete at the top level.
Oh, and like Awesomite also said - it's about having realistic expectations and being relaxed about them. For example - I really, really want Thrawn. My Phoenix squad wasn't strong enough to get him last time. It may or may not be strong enough to get him this time. But, with goal-setting and hard work, I guarantee it will be strong enough next time. Which may take six months. If you're cool with that - enjoy the game. If you're not - go do something else you prefer. Easy.
