There's a notification preferences section. There's an option to get notifications on discussions you've started, discussions you've commented in and discussions you've bookmarked.

If you posted in a thread and have the option to get notifications for discussions you've commented in you will always get notifications for that thread.

Personally I have all notifications turned off except for people quoting me, mentioning me and threads I specifically bookmark.
