Another idea for fixing thermal detonators would be to give a damage bonus for early detonation of a thermal detonator, and then add a mechanic where if someone who has a thermal detonator attached to them uses anything that causes damage (i.e. an attack, as opposed to healing or applying a buff), it triggers the thermal detonator to go off prematurely.
This would provide a good synergy with Zam, and would also make for an interesting mechanic since some characters might need to think twice about triggering a detonator early (and accepting the increased damage) vs. choosing to wait for the detonator to go off later or be dispelled but at the expense of not attacking. Some characters might not even get to make this choice, if they don't have any "passive" abilities to use in place of attacking.
