7* Fives vs 5* General Kanobi

My Fives is only gear 8. I haven't done anything to my kanobi yet. Is a 5* gear 8 kanobi going to be as tanky as a 7* fives. I could get Kanobi to gear 8 pretty quickly but have been holding off until I get him more stars.
