Also remember that every time you face other opponents then they are something of an advertisement for certain characters. You see that a lot in events where you get to use a certain character that you don't have - it's like a test drive. But yes, also in GW - if there are characters that keep hammering you then that would seem to be motivation for you to work (or pay) to get them.
