Personally I'd rather put the work into a character that's going to be good, rather than a little less work into one that's not going to be as good.

Except half the people on this forum say Chopper is functionally better. So it's not nonsensical at all. If I have no idea which of the two is better, and half the people say one and half the people say the other, give me the easier farm all the way.
And it's not "a little less work" it's a ton less work. Farming Sabine from scratch on a single hard mode? Have fun.
