Next time I will play hard mode if the reward chest is as you say, less effort to get some stuff in a mode that is just not fun.
Also S1 is when you have the fewest disks and the challenges are scaled expecting you don't have very many disks yet, and that because yo have so few and because of RNG, the disks cannot be expected to synergize yet.
As a result, you can probably get the first reward crate (which is equal to max on Normal) without messing with Disks at all.
