Lets look at both cases:
Deathtrooper: Defeated is the adjective: The game checks all characters and checks if they are dead. Zombie has been revived and is thus not defeated at that moment: Checks out, Deathmark not applied.
Ventress: Defeated is the verb: The game does not check if any charcaters are dead, because only death causes the ability to trigger: End result: Zombie was defeated and thus triggers the ability.
Is vs Was
