For arena (your main source of crystals), ANY team that has synergy will improve your rank and get you out of the 2,000s if you focus on them, and don’t spread yourself too thin. You need a dozen different teams right now, but your gear and leveling should be focused on ONE team to get you through Galactic War, cantina battles, light or dark side battles, and to improve arena rank, and a secondary team of the opposite L/D alignment. Leaving personal preference aside for the moment, a lot of which one is ideal NOW depends on what teams you’re facing in your arena the most. However, the best team now is mostly irrelevant. The best team at level 56 is the one with the most gear.
Your focus should be on the future with the path you pick. And in my opinion, the fastest stepping stone to a team that is VERY good (even for end game players) that you can reach is Seperatists. That will allow you to unlock Padmé who leads one of the three strongest teams in the game currently. Focus on Seperatists until you can get a 7* Padmé. That could be months. When you get her though, start shifting your focus to her team. Even at 5* start gearing her and her team a bit more even though you still need to get the Seperatists to the point of getting her at 7*. You should be able to get Anakin, Ahsoka and Old Ben to go with her. A decent Jedi team should be able to unlock Grand Master Yoda fairly early. And as you start doing the tank raid, General Kenobi can replace Old Ben as tank. Then you can go all out gearing them. At that point (with those teams very strong) you will have the resources coming in to branch out more. And the game will have no doubt changed significantly by then as it always does. You will need to reassess, and decide on new goals.
You have a loooooooong way to go, but if it makes you feel better... I had the very first 7*/relic 7 General Skywalker on my December 2015 shard. Padmé teams are probably the hardest battles I deal with even still. You are one intermediate step from that team.
Thanks for mapping out the path for me. I think I've more or less a coherent strategy to follow with regard to building my roster for the next couple months. I'll start diverting resources away from the Phoenix Squad, apart from its two Jedi members Ezra and Kanan, towards building a Jedi team that'll help me unlock Grandmaster Yoda first.
I've three out of the five needed Jedi so far, the two mentioned above and Mace Windu. Which other two should I acquire to round out the initial team? I'm leaning towards Ahsoka and Luminara Unduli, since the latter is also part of the daily login rewards. Eventually I'll get Jedi Knight Anakin as well, and maybe Old Ben to replace Kanan?
After the above is accomplished I'll start gathering those Separatists to unlock Padme. Or perhaps they can be done concurrently? I think with this plan I'll likely stagnate in arena for the next month or so, currently at around 1600. But I don't really mind the grind as it's part of the fun I guess.
I only regret not having gone down the Separatist route right from the start.
