Every pilot has a crew power stat. Crew power affects ship power/stats.
You get plenty of credits from calendars and guild events (unless you're in one of those starter guilds). Spend it wisely.
Yes, the game is grindy, but there are sooo many ways (game modes) where new players shards, gear and resources to build their roster and fleets. You will get your own level 50 (or even 60) fleet quite fast.
