I know this sounds dumb, but what is the difference between physical and special damage?

I think special means less physical (insert sarcastic wow here). Almost all special damage is from something related to the Force, like force lightning.

Then some characters have specials that deal physical damage (Piett, Rex, etc.) this is confusing ?

It's not a dumb question at all. It's a good question because it can be confusing. If you look at a character's abilities, it will say, "does physical damage" or "does special damage". GMY does special damage, SLKR does physical damage as an example of two characters that do different types of damage.

Neither is better.

They are based on different stats though. You have physical offence and special offence.

Until they start doing something stupid like "this character is immune to physical damage" don't worry about it.

I think it may have to do with if the character has higher physical or special damage. For example, DR only does special and his special damage is higher.

I think physical damage applies to a character's armor stat and special damage applies to a character's resistance stat. So characters like 5s and Old Ben who have high armor will take more damage from special attackers like Darth Revan and less damage from physical attackers like Canderous Ordo. Whether or not a character uses physical or special damage during an attack depends entirely on the ability being used.
