This is true although the crystal rewards from arena haven't changed in ages. It's still the same payout rewards as it was even before mods/ships/cap increase/etc. There is so much more content now that they should be giving out some more crystals anyway.
Also I'm not sure about other shards, but my shard has a ton of people all getting #1 payouts every day. There are some that share payouts but usually that is only about 3 people per payout. I don't think the amount of extra crystals given out would be huge.
Their downside - giving out a few extra crystals
Their upside - allowing players to play when they want instead of dinner time, making for happier players. Also a lot of players don't spend money at all because they can't make payout and feel why bother since they can never be competitive. This would now actually give them a reason to spend more.
