If he can save 2 or 3 of your faction ships, that's better than reinforcing with one faction ship, especially since you're just replacing your 7th choice faction ship and only use him when his cleanse & heal are going to be beneficial. The big issue with Mal v Mal is that pretty much everyone has the exact same speed, so it comes down to a coin flip at the beginning.

In arena I just swap back and forth, attack Mal with Nego & vice versa so I don't have to fight mirror matches. It's a little more complicated in GAC where you have to guess what they're saving on D, but not a lot.
