Is reaching relic 7 even worth it?
So I find this particular issue to be very frustrating. Call me a newb but is it really worth the trouble of fully relicing a toon? Sure mods make all the difference because by the end of the day ever...

I agree that key toons is the way to go. For example for NS you probably want a high relic daka so she survives the sideous are and brings your team back. Is r7 req for that. I don't know. Mine is still gear 12 and gets destroyed. If you can beat it with r5 and good mods then no reason to r7. If not then r7 on one or two characters (or even a whole team) that means getting another recurring stream of relic materials is probably worth it.
Same goes for arena. If you can get to the top without spending much on refreshes with non r7 toons, then there is no benefit to relicing them higher. Better to save the gear for the next meta.
For gac and tw it really does little good. Matchmaking adjusts for gp and adding to your gp just gives you opponents that did the same.
So relicing toons that will lead to higher dmg in raids, more stars in tb, beating over you can't otherwise beat, or higher rank in either arenas are worth it. Other than those things, it's just vanity. And vanity in this game is expensive.
