I started in Jan 2017, so I am also playing less than a year. My biggest advice is to put all your efforts in your arena team. You have over 30 gear 8 chars but only one above gear 8. Put all your efforts in one toon at a time, then do the next toon. I extended my rooster when I had five gear 11 toons. It was a bit frustrating, spending one month to gear up Kenobi, than another month to gear up Trawn. But it worked, I can get arena rank 1 as ftp without CLS.
If you just gear up very few toons, you obviously need to choose wisely. I just geared the strongest toons available. R2, Trawn, Kenobi, Nihilus, Rex, Chaze are good and will be good for a long time. New meta toons (like CLS) still use 3-4 old meta toons in their team.
Mods are also very important. I farmed them one month with three refreshes, then my arena toons had +80 or even +100 speed. Just farm 5* health mods, the secondary stats are more important than the set bonus.
