Yup, it's annoying but it works. Usually you don't have the best possible stats as you're mixing and matching your best speed secondaries, but it doesn't really matter as Wedge provides the bulk of the DPS. In fact, they're usually overkill anyway for taking out an opposing Wedge or EP.
With an Ackbar lead, there's a strong chance to take out a JE as well, although droid teams don't tend to win whether they go first or not these days (at least on my shard).
Your opponents will hate you though. You may even hate yourself (I do!). But it's like the nuclear arms race, if you don't arm yourself then someone else will.
Personally I'd be happy if none of us were using the nukes!
