On his second zeta crackling doom, the ability says he gains +50% max protection. Then each time he inflicts shock he (gains) 5% protection. Does anyone know if this mean he gains a 5% larger protecti...

Yes, he regenerates 5% prot, as well as gains 5% extra stacking on top of his prot. All abilities with such descriptions do that.
Anyone who has played against/with palp for a reasonable amount of time will see that.
