How do you increase a ships speed. Im tired of always being second to go in battle and loosing from it

Are all of your pilot's mod slots equipped? I usually throw my high-dot level 15 mods that didn't turn out as well on my characters that I am only using as pilots like Jedi Consular. That makes a big difference.
