How do you increase a ships speed. Im tired of always being second to go in battle and loosing from it

The OP didn't ask how to use his credits and gear most effectively, he asked how can he be sure he goes 1st. The only way to do that is to max out your ship completely, as stars, gear, pilot level, ship level and ability level all contribute to ships stats. @scuba answered the question asked.
