A little lesson in canon in the Star Wars universe. Even pre-Disney, the EU wasn't canon per se. Lucas allowed it to exist with the caveat that he could overwrite it at any time. An example is the Clone Wars cartoon versus the Clone Wars comics and the Clone based novels by Karen Traviss.
That lead to levels of canon pre-Disney, where anything by Lucas was G (George) level canon, which was the top level. This was the six movies. C (continuity) canon was the books, comics video games, etc. That is where Lumiya existed. Next was S (secondary) canon. It covered the same materials as C canon, but were items that were superceeded by higher canon. Examples included items in the Clone Wars comics that no longer fit based on the Clone Wars cartoon. The last level was N (non-canon) canon which included the what if stories like the Star Wars Infinities series. Once Clone Wars came out, T (TV) level canon was created and was specifically for the Clone Wars TV series (not the previous Tarkakovsky's seires). This level was between G and C canon.
Once the Disney purchase came around, the story group was created and what was the EU (expanded universe) became Legends. Disney stated that all material coming forward was canon...books, comics, video games, etc. unless specifically stated otherwise. The ongoing KOTOR MMO was designated Legends and is the only new Legends material at this point. Also, things like the Lego cartoons aren't considered canon. The story group stated that items could be pulled from Legends and made canon, like Thrawn in the Rebels cartoon. However, this doesn't mean that all Thrawn material is now canon. The new Thrawn novel is canon while the old Zahn books are Legends.
So Lumiya was never canon on the same level as Luke and Leia, but under Disney, Thrawn is canon on the same level as any character from the movies.
