Should I save up for Negotiator or just buy shards whenever I can?
I've heard of a number of people saving up their valuable currencies rather than than spending it as soon as it comes in. Anybody have strong feelings on this?

Exactly. Save until you have enough to activate it. That way if something changes, like a better ship/toon shows up in the mk2 store you can swap to it without 'losing' anything by having say 40/145 shards.
Thirded. Once you start buying the shards, it does not take long to spend that pile you have saved. Save enough to unlock or 7*, then splurge.
