It has been discussed before in an old thread. There is a difference between a buff and a positive status effect. The taunt is a buff (which is also a positive status effect). The TM granted to allies is a positive status effect but not a buff. Shock prevents gaining buffs but doesn't prevent gaining all positive status effects, hence it prevents gaining taunts but not the TM granting effect. QGJ dispels all positive status effects — both taunt and the TM granting effect.
Long story short:
It all works according to the descriptions of the abilities. You just need to read it carefully. They use different words for different abilities and effects for a reason.
This makes perfect sense, thank you. The only piece I'm missing then is a description of the effect of "shock." Where is it written that it prevents buffs but not positive status effects?
