Has anyone tried using bistan, Vader and anakin as a starting lineup in ships? The synergy and damage output from this three almost makes me think you could open without a tank. Paired with AA...

Assuming all are maxed, opening turn order is Anakin, Vader, Bistan and there are faster opponents that can go before Anakin, most motably Tie Silencer with its stun but also the other three Ties, Umbaran and probably others.
A maxed Home One will go right after Anakin if your TM train is disrupted and Defiant Volley would be very bad news for your squishy squadron.
With bistan unique, he should go first. +25% speed puts him in the 180s

Still not sure it would work, but it does give it some credence on paper, but like you said, with no one to take the heat, it's just too easy to pick apart.
