No. Under the old system of calculations, a zeta was still worth a higher crew rating than an omega.
It was not purely aesthetic, but the difference either of them made was relatively minor, and only if you made it to certain breakpoints would it actually make a noticeable difference in stats.
However, everything is/was based on that crew rating, so increasing it in any fashion is the only way to improve anything on your ships.
