Your guild may also have instructions for setting defense. If you can't field some of the teams, ask an officer.

Assault Battles and Galictic Challenges are better targets to build teams for, they will increase your game income, and those teams will have TW value. Ideally your Officers are using teams that already prioritized for TB, character unlocks, etc.
TW and GAC are fun, but mastering them won't significantly increase your reward income.

This. TBH, if your guild is not providing you with advice or instructions on how to proceed, it may be time to find a new guild. It's hard to give meaningful advice without knowing all of your guild's resources.

If your guild is ALL brand new to TW, that's different. In that case, I'd just kind of split the difference; see what happens; discuss it with your guild and adjust from there.
