So I have TFP. I was told he does great damage. He's 7* gear 8. I can barely get 3-4k damage out of him. He never crits. I have hit one crit in weeks. Just seems like a waste of a spot on my squ...

I'd keep using him. You don't have much better options to farm as of right now, and he's not bad at all, just dated. The more you invest, the better he'll get.
That said, the best use for him is probably getting r2. Outside of that, he'll probably see TW action and maybe TB. He is one a pretty good ship too.
My suggestion is go for g9 or g10, unless he ends up being an important ship for you.
