Padme Was the Queen of the Naboo, whereas Leia was the ADOPTED princess, Padme's planet was liberated, while Leia's was blown to bits, and the most important thing to recognize about Padme is that SHE GAVE PALPATINE POWER BY NOMINATING HIM FOR SUPREME CHANCELLOR!!!
Padme's death was the reason for Anakin's fear, and as yoda put it, fear leads to the dark side.
What I'm saying is that Padme is the CAUSE OF THE EMPIRE, and therefore the rebellion, as her actions got Palp into power, and her marriage to Anakin ultimately spurred him into joining the dark side. Leia and even more so Rey are both just two people who were born into an oppressive galaxy, didn't like it and ended up fighting the Empire and First Order Respectively. I NEVER said that leia was less of an icon, she truly is a bigger one, but logically padme is a much more important character to the sequence of events that led to the Empire, and therefore the rebellion, who destroyed the Empire leading to the first order and then the resistance against that. The ONLY thing in the Star Wars Universe that could've made Padme not be such a key character is if she wasn't the one to nominate palp, and if the Empire's rise had come from the separatists winning the war.
You're drawing correlations where none exist. PALPATINE is the CAUSE OF THE EMPIRE, and therefore the rebellion, as his actions got himself into power by manipulating both Padme and the rest of the Senate to put him in power. She is a pawn; a piece to be sacrificed in order to get a specific Knight into a more vulnerable position. Had she not nominated him for the position (under his manipulations, no less), he would have simply found someone else to do it. Not ideally, but certainly a contingency. Palpatine was the master manipulator, hiding the most malevolent power of the dark side, almost literally, under the Jedi's noses. Do you really think that such a master of shadows on the verge of enacting a thousand year prophecy didn't have a back-up plan?
Anakin is the only character who Palpatine had to gamble on, and it was due to his sheer power. Saying that Padme is the cause of the Empire is akin to saying that Jodie Foster is the reason Ronald Reagan was re-elected because John Hinckley tried to assassinate him over her. Separately, these two statements are correct, but there is absolutely no actual correlation between the two facts in my example or your argument.
I respect that she's an important character, and I agreed with you that she should be in the game. However, by your own argument you describe her as a glorified motivational tool, to be judged by her manipulations instead of her actions. Leia was born into much more oppressive circumstances than Padme and actually took her destiny into her own hands, instead of letting it be manipulated by powerful forces of darkness. The same ones that Leia successfully destroyed. Leia is a stronger character, and certainly a more important one both in context of the Star Wars universe as well as pop culture.
