I'm trying to advance in the AI battles so I can gain access to more battles and thus character shards, but my team is often slaughtered by the AI. And the confusing part? I send in my highest leveled characters, which range from the low 50's in level to 60 for my strongest unit, up against level 39 AI. My team is heavily damaged during the AI's first turn and my attacks barely do anything despite the level difference.What might I be doing wrong?

You'd need to provide some details about your squad and gear level. Hard to answer otherwise!

mods... almost always the answer. As soon as I put 5pip, level 15 mods that were generally improving the characters strengths - big improvement.

Gear and mods are more important than levels and stars. Be sure also to send squads that work well together.If you can't beat a higher node, it's probably better to farm lower nodes to increase the gear levels of your characters.

After all, it's the AI dishing out massive damage and hardly getting a cut from my units that's the problem. I doubt squad comp will do anything to change that.

In 10 days you will unlock Han then, not that bad

Should I prioritize Han or Ackbar?

Both are Rebels and Scoundrels. They will be useful in LS battles, but also Credit Heist (for example with Boba, Cad Bane and, sigh, Chewie).
Wiggs, Lando, Leia, STH make a good LS team (and Arena too, early on).

Drop rate is around 1/3, hence the use of the word "farming". You have to do many battles to get the gear, but it's the goal of the game.

Thanks, exactly what I thought. You've been focusing on levelling your characters, but what really matters is pushing the gear levels higher. You should focus on that for a while : pick a list of characters, and look for their gear.
In Cantina, I'd suggest you farm and develop Lando Calrissian, he's a Scoundrel that will help you big time. When unlocked, focus on Wedge for a time.
On Arena shop, focus on Stormtrooper Han ; he's a Scoundrel too, and a good character throughout the game.
Start gearing up those characters that you already have at a high level, but some of the characters you've left out are better, so longer term you'll have to work on them (Biggs, Leia, Vader, Fives, Tarkin, TFP, mostly).

Why Lando and Stormtrooper Han, specifically?

I try to gear them up but it's frustrating because I can only find gear from a few specific battles, I do those battles and usually I receive no gear, the wrong gear or not enough gear to craft what I need for the character, if that makes sense. And it eats up all my energy.

They are good and needed for some important events (Credit heist and Droid sumuggling)

Based on looking at your toons you need to pick 5 toons and work on getting them up to gear 7/8 for you that will help alot and stick with 5 don't worry about branching out to other toons til you get 5 that are awesome and gear 7 preferably 8. For being a newer person a great starter squad would be the Phoenix guys

Lando has high damage output via his AOE and StHan is a taunting tank that gives you a boost in turn meter. Both good early - mid game characters that will help you in various bits of the game.

Is Chewie really not that good? I see him in Galactic War and Arena all the time and he's tough to take down.

He is not a threat, so you may take him out last, either Ability Blocking, Stunning him, or dispelling his Taunt when he triggers it.
You see him so often because he's a character everyone starts with. You may use him at start, but as soon as possible you should shift your focus to another tank.

Well Sabine is hardest to farm becuase she is mostly out of the guild store but she is def one you'd want to get the others are all fairly easy to farm

Maybe Chopper, because the others are easier to farm
