In order to receive rewards in GAC, you need a minimum of 10 banners. Those are awarded if you complete one battle, no matter if you win or lose. If you don't complete the battle, no banners will be awarded. They will be granted/added when you complete the next battle. Both of you apparently never completed the first battle and therefore were not awarded the 10 bonus banners for the first battle. This is working as intended and not a bug.
