Based on their GP, they have an average GP of ~3.77M per player compared to the 2.99M GP per your average player.
Since only 19 squads were assignable per zone, that tells us your opponents only had 37-38 players sign up for the war (1 squad per 2 players). If we take 38 players x 3.77M gp = ~143M gp that they used for the war. Your 49 players would have been ~146M gp total for the war.
So based on that, it seems like the new algorithm is strongly biased towards the total GP, and the total GPs signed up for the war seems to be approximately even.
