Sims1-stopping an automatic Career change at top level of Career

I understand this happens if you are at the top level job of your career. Is it automatic? You don't even get a pop up asking you if you want it? Because one of my sims is almost at the top level of the fashion career track and I don't want her to take a lower paying job as fashion is one of the highest. Surprised they didn't give you a choice not to change it.
