SIMS double deluxe serial number errors

I purchased an external disc reader and was super excited to show my daughter the game, and after figuring out the compatibility part, I am running into the issue of my 22-digit serial number not working. I am only able to type in 20 digits, and that doesn't work either, leaving off the last 2 numbers.  

Has anyone had these issues?
