I have been trying to use the "set to birthday" cheat to age up my child to a teenager. However when I select "grow up" the age of the child sets back from one day to teenager to six days to teenager. The cake doesn't work, nor does the mailbox cheat. Not sure what is going on, it worked a few days ago just fine.
*Edit blowing out the candles does the same thing, it reverses my Sims age backward. The Sim also won't get older as days pass. I dont have the "aging off" cheat activated.

You didn't say if you had Mods installed? You didn't say if you tried without any mods installed - a different neighborhood or family, if you want. Just don't save. :)
The Sim may be corrupted or broken for some reason. Is anything missing, like their aspiration or personality points? It's also possible that the cheat simply isn't working. I've never tried to use it. The regular in game cakes only work if they are one day from aging up or it is the day they are supposed to age up, is it within that window?
If nothing else is wrong that you can identify, if you are open to mods, I suggest you get the Simlogical Heirloom cake, which allows you to age Sims at any time (and kill elders). Try that and see what it does. I've been using it for years and wouldn't play without it.
I have no mods installed. It works with another family in another neighborhood. I tried using moveobjectson and deleting the sim too.
I use the cake within one day. I'm starting to think the family is corrupted, everything works fine with other families.
Did you check to see if anyone is missing an aspiration or has an incorrect aspiration? You can also try spawning the tombstone of life and death which has an aging option.
When I use the tombstone, the Sim will go to one day to age up. Then when I select "grow up", or use the cake, or use the mailbox cheat, the age reverts to six days to age up. I tried a new tombstone, that didn't work either.
I'm just going to delete the family and start over. Nothing seems to work for this particular family.
