You do not install the patch in the game files. That is probably why it is crashing, it has a unknown program in there. After downloading the 4 Gb patch, click on it to run it, then choose the Sims2EP9.exe in that file location you have to "patch" the game .exe
As for the graphic rules, it doesn't work with every graphics card. Semi recent ones and newer ones are not effected by it. You can take a look here and change your files by hand.
