Sims corrupted on Sims 2

I played again after the patch released on 2/4 and after a few hours, my Sim and pet disappeared. The other Sim in my family still has memories associated with them, but they are listed as "$Subject" instead of their name. It's happened multiple times for me both before and after the latest patch.
