Mary Kendall, A Ghost Story
Dates
Bekka greets Jamie and invites him in. She smiles shyly and notices how relaxed Jamie seems. She hopes she is not as shaky on the outside as she feels on the inside. She takes a deep breath and tries to relax. “I’m really glad you were able to come.”
“Thank you for inviting me. I’m looking forward to getting to know you better, Bekka. You have a lovely home. Did you design the house yourself?” He looks around the room impressed with the design and decor. Jamie may look calm on the outside but he feels like someone is tap dancing on his stomach. He knows how important this is to him and Bekka if they are going to get past their initial misunderstanding.
“Yes, after my parents died, I couldn’t stay in our home. Too many memories. I eventually sold it and had this place built. It’s the perfect size for my cats and myself.”

Sari is the calico and Rani the kitten. They are very friendly and love company. Dinner is almost finished. I hope you are hungry. I always make too much. It’s a recipe my Mom taught me and it makes enough for a large family.”
Jamie kneels down and pets Rani and Sari while Bekka gets the meal completed and ready to serve. “It smells scrumptious! I am hungry and looking forward to it.”

“This is delicious. I love pasta dishes.”
"My Mom made her own pasta and taught me how to make it as well. I feel close to her when cooking and enjoy making homemade meals.”
“I’m very sorry you lost your parents. Can you talk about it?”
“I can talk about it now. I was 15 when it happened. They were killed in a car accident coming back from a trip to Monte Vista. I was not with them as school was still in session and I had stayed with my best friends' family.”
“I’m so sorry,” Jamie unconsciously reaches out and touches her hand lightly, feeling the need to connect physically with her. “Any age is tragic to lose a parent, but especially when you are still young and need them. Did you move to Monte Vista to be with your family there?”
Bekka felt his light touch on her hand and the internal shakiness eases off. She suddenly feels calm and looks over at him in wonder.
'Does he know he's a healer,' she thinks to herself?
“No, I stayed here with my guardian’s family. I was closer to them than the family back in Monte Vista. My parents had asked their dear friends who are my Godparents to be my guardians if anything should ever happen to them. I stayed with them until I went to university.

“Our house was haunted! I was the only one who saw the ghost, though. My family thought I had an imaginary friend. I didn’t. I sensed a presence in the house from a young age. The ghost appeared to me when I was a young teen. He had been haunting the house for over 150 years. He told me his death was sudden and as he lay dying he regretted not informing his family where he hid his money and valuables. Banks were few and far between in those days and most people kept money and valuables in safes. Merv didn’t believe in safes either. He thinks he will not move on until the money and valuables are recovered.
He told me where it was hidden. I took Damien with me, and we dug in the graveyard on the property and found Merv’s cash and valuables in a crypt buried underground. It took us most of the summer to dig down to it. A storm had knocked down the building over the crypt many years ago and it had been covered over. Damien thought I found clues in a book I found in the attic. He thought it was solely for fun and we were not going to find anything. He didn't believe in the occult back then.
I showed Merv his things. He was very happy as well as sad since he didn't know where his family was. He told me to keep it. I showed it to my parents and had to show Dad where we dug it up. Dad was able to invest the cash and sell the valuables. He put it all away for college for my brother, myself and for Damien since he helped with the excavation. Merv told me it was time for him to go, and I watched him leave in a burst of light. I knew he had made it home to the heavens.
I spent all my free time after that reading books and studying anything I could get my hands on about the occult and ghosts. I discovered the occult world existed and mostly stayed hidden from mortals. I befriended a werewolf in Riverview who taught me about supernaturals. I learned there were more harmful ghosts like poltergeists than friendly ones like Merv. I studied how to capture and dispose of poltergeists and other dangerous spirits. It’s only been in the last few years that ghost hunters are no longer laughed at, mocked or locked up.”
“What a fantastic story. I'm glad you could help him at such a young age. Are you sure you don’t have a little occult in you? It is usually around the teen years that a child will come into his partial powers and then fully as a young adult. That sounds like what happened to you with suddenly being able to see Merv, not just sense him. Did you gain more powers as a young adult?”
“I’m unaware of anything in our family history. My parents and grandparents are definitely human. I don't really consider what I do as powers. I don't really have to even think about it. It's not like I'm casting spells. It is just part of me, when I walk into a building or room, I sense things.”
“Hmm, I suppose it could be far enough back in the ancestry that it was dormant and finally manifested in you. Does your brother do this as well,” Bekka asks?
"No, my brother is very logical, has no imagination and is studying business administration. He's a good kid despite all that." Jamie grins and it is obvious that he loves his younger brother.

He watches the cats play on their tower and laughs at their playfulness. Bekka lights a fire in the fireplace and invites him to sit down. "I think it is time for me to tell you what happened and why I was so ugly to you at the park. I hope you can forgive me."
"I already have, dear Bekka. I will listen to your story as I think you need to tell it so you can forgive yourself."
She looks up, startled. "Yes, how very perceptive of you. I'm ashamed and having a hard time forgiving myself."

She nods her agreement and Damien uses his phone to snap a picture of them in front of the doorway. He holds her hand and they walk inside.

Damien grins and starts the story. “It was our junior prom and we double dated with our girls. The prom was lots of fun, and we had a great time. We took our dates to the fanciest restaurant in town afterwards and had a delicious meal. When the waiter produced the bill, I hunted for my wallet and did not have it. I was panicked, not sure where I lost it. Jamie did not have his as he had given me his share before we left the house. I remember sitting the wallet on the table, but I didn't remember picking it back up. The manager would not let us go home to get the wallet. Jamie offered to go by himself but the manager said no. Our parents were at a conference, so we could not call them. The manager had pity on the girls and sent them home in a taxi. Jamie and I washed dishes the rest of the night to pay for our dinner.“
“So that is why Jamie teases you about your wallet,” Mary laughs.
“I haven’t forgotten it since. Knock on wood!” Damien knocks on the wooden table to prevent the jinx.

Do you suppose they are real,” Mary questions?
“They sure are beautiful and look real. I wonder if they use a little magic to make them bloom outside this room? I never would have thought about it before but now I realize there is quite a bit of magic in our world.”
“So, tell me why you wanted me to leave Rebecca and Jamie together for a little while at the house.”
Damien explains about Jamie and Rebecca’s meeting at the park and that they had a misunderstanding but he doesn’t know all the details.
"The only reason I know anything, I could tell he was upset and he finally told me a little. He did not know it was Rebecca until she arrived. I was hoping to give them a chance to talk about it, and they did and agreed to talk more this evening.”
“Ah, I see. They seemed to be getting along pretty well when I interrupted them. I did sense some sadness in her and hope things work out. She seems so nice, and she has some clever ideas for the renovations. And she's not frightened of ghosts like the previous contractor was!”
"All very good points! Jamie has a unique ability to help others. Not just ghosts. If she will let him, he can help her. I know he is very taken with her. I could see it when he talked about her."

Thank you for inviting me here with you.” Mary takes a sip of her nectar. “This is a really nice nectar too.”
They finish their meal and Damien reaches across the table and holds her hand in his. “I’m very happy you came with me. I want to share so many things with you. I love watching your eyes light up with excitement and happiness. I love not seeing that sadness all the time.”
“Damien, how can I be sad now? You’ve brought me back to life even though I’m still a ghost. I’m more alive in the last few weeks than I’ve been in the last 50 years. Your spirit and zest for life made me realize just how bitter I had become. No wonder I was angry and unhappy all the time dwelling on what happened so long ago, rather than what is happening right now.”
The waiter arrives with the check and Damien playfully hunts for his wallet while Mary giggles at him. He loves hearing that sound and wants to make her laugh and happy all the time.

You know, Damien I despised winters for so long! But when I can walk in the snow with your arms around me making me feel warm and cared for, I don’t mind winter at all.”
Damien’s heart leaped in his chest hearing Mary say that. He wants to take her in his arms right then and there and kiss her senseless but there is a crowd milling around the theater and he doesn’t want their first true kiss to be in the middle of a crowd. “Shall we skip the movie and keep walking?”
“Oh no! I’ve got my heart set on popcorn and a movie,” she tells him. “And perhaps some chocolate covered raisins too!”
Mary chose to see 'Sims in Space' , the hit sci-fi flick. “Damien, I’m a science nerd, of course I’m picking a sci-fi movie over romance.”
“Works for me,“ he tells her, happy that he doesn’t have to sit through the current romance hit.
