Mary Kendall, A Ghost Story
Trust

Bekka opens her eyes as her alarm blares. Wiping the sleep out of her eyes, she surprisingly feels light-hearted this morning. She stands and stretches her arms over her head and spies the gorgeous rose that Jamie gave her. Looking at it makes her feel warm and safe as if he has his arms wrapped around her. Bekka reaches out and gently touches the soft petals and smiles thinking of Jamie’s pure happiness and sense of fun yesterday during their time together. That was one of the best days in a very long time. She prays for healing and to rid herself of all these feelings inside from this last couple of years. She always thought of herself as a strong person and feeling broken is extremely hard for her. She sighs thinking about how she allowed her ex to take over and dominate her life both when they were together and after she broke it off with him. She writes rose...safe...regret on her scrap of paper.

Smelling the rich brew helps to finish waking her up. She has so much to do today and starts a list to stay focused. As she adds more and more items on her pad the stress level rises and the desire to curl back in bed and forget it all increases.
Bekka tosses the pad down on her counter and picks up her coffee mug and takes a sip and talks to herself.
Getting frustrated is not going to help. I just need to get busy. Sipping her delicious coffee, she completes her list and places it on the counter. The scrap of paper now has stress written on it.

She doesn’t open it as it is too early in the morning for visitors. “Who’s there?” she calls out.
“It’s Jamie. I was riding back to the hotel after a late call, well technically an early morning call, and saw your light on. I know it’s early. I wanted to be sure you are ok.”
Bekka’s heart leaps not in fear, but in surprise and delight hearing his voice and concern for her. She opens the door and invites him in. “Do you ever get a full nights sleep with your ghost hunting? Want some coffee? I just brewed fresh.”
Jamie shrugs out of his leathers and enjoys the warmth of Bekka’s smile and the feeling of home he has with her. He longs to take her in his arms and hold her tightly and kiss all her worries away. He can sense she is feeling stressed.
“I do get the occasional time off and sleep all night." His lips twitch into a grin that melts her heart. "I would love some coffee. Why are you up so early?”
“Lots to do today, remember. I figured I’d better start early. I was just heading to the shower when you knocked.”
“You go shower and I’ll fix breakfast. You need a good meal to get your energy going for the day.” He heads to the kitchen taking her acceptance for granted.
She thoughtfully watches him walk to the kitchen, a soft smile lighting her face. Her ex never bothered fixing a meal their entire time together. Jamie is definitely not her ex.

He doesn’t cook much, usually eating out, or having quick meals. There are a few things he does cook and can cook very well. Waffles he can cook. He finds her supplies easily and adds some blueberries he found in the fridge to the mix as well. He notices her 'to do' list on the counter. He can easily cross off a number of those items for her, so she can concentrate on work.
Bekka enjoys the waffles and thanks Jamie for fixing them. “I love the blueberries in them.”
“I love pancakes the best, but I have a tendency to burn them so waffles are safer for me to cook."

She protests he needs to get some sleep. He looks tenderly at her with appreciation for her concern and gently turns her to the studio door telling her, “go work, I’m fine.”
Bekka sits at her design board chewing thoughtfully on a pencil as she contemplates her undeniable feelings for Jamie. Even with the rough start and not knowing each other very long, she realizes she sincerely trusts him. She instinctively knows he wouldn’t do anything to hurt her. She looks down at the doodles on her pad and laughs at the drawing. Jamie’s name is on the pad with hearts and flowers all around it. ‘Sheesh, I’m 13 years old again.’ She tears the page off her pad and folds it carefully, tucking it away in the drawer. She pulls out her paper and writes...trust. She starts another drawing and is soon concentrating on work and drawing her visions, so she can present the designs to her clients.

He notices both of the cats are awake and makes sure they have fresh food and water. He plays with them and both cats are friendlier and no hissing happens. Jamie cleans the living area and removes the char and soot from the fireplace laying fresh wood to use later. He puts all the indoor and outdoor Christmas decorations in her storage. He checks her list and cleans the bathroom which was immaculate anyway. He knows how much she enjoys flowers and he rides to the local nursery and picks up two new ones to replace the poinsettia plants he stored.

Bekka finalizes the two unique designs and is pleased with the results and hopes her clients will be. She also has time to draw a few sketches for the restaurant owner and is hoping he will call today. Soon it is almost time to leave for her appointments. She takes an empty journal from her bookshelves and transcribes the words she has written on the scrap paper into the journal. She adds the poem she wrote last night. She writes two more words...strength...determination. She knows she gains strength from Jamie somehow, someway and she is determined to get better.

Where did you get the new plants? They are beautiful. Oh, look at the bunny peeking around the plant. Jamie! It is so adorable. It might be winter outside, but it is spring in here. I love them.”
“It looked a little bare without the poinsettia plants so I rode to the nursery. I thought of you when I saw them. I hoped you would like them.”
"I love them both. They are perfect. Thank you so much for doing that and for taking down my decorations. I really appreciate it so much."
He takes her hands and holds them lightly. “It's no biggie!” He tells her. "I love seeing you smile and I know how much you love flowers.”
“I will think of you as I take care of them.”
“That is even better! I hope you stare at them all day.” he smiles enthusiastically.
She laughs happily. "I'm sorry, I have to leave for my appointments. Will you please stay and at least take a nap while I'm gone. I'll worry about you riding with so little sleep. Promise?" She looks up at him, the concern obvious in her face.
Jamie nods in agreement. "If it will take the worry off your face and put a smile back on, I will stay and take a nap. I have to admit the nights work is catching up with me now. I only got a couple of hours before I got called back out."
Bekka smiles, pleased that he will stay. "I'll be back in a few hours." She squeezes his hand and grabs her portfolio and keys and reluctantly leaves the house. She pulls her helmet on and sits back on her motorcycle ready to leave but first takes her journal out of her bag and writes...joy.
