Jade came through your office door with the look of a woman who couldn't be more pleased with life. After the ritual small talk, and a cup of coffee, she jumps into her purpose for being there. "I am incredibly impressed with how you handled the shipping container house. Everything from the design, to the décor, to the selling price was above my expectations. I've also received a very long and very happy letter from the purchasers about their new house."

You smile happily, leaning back in your chair. This kind of thing makes the job worth doing.

Jade sips her coffee before continuing, "I want you to build 3 more houses with shipping containers."

You blink and sit up, "3? Just like the first? You have more buyers already?"

"No. These are 3 more prototypes. I want each one on a different lot, and each one with a different design style. They will also have a different price point. Like the first one, I'll want you to provide the schematics and files so that we can produce them to order later." Jade pulls a file folder out of her briefcase and hands it to you. "All the information is in there." She drinks her coffee, waiting for you to scan the information.

When you're done, you think for a few moments then look up, "This will be tricky to get done in 2 weeks. Can I have 3?"

"Sure." Jade stands, putting her cup on the tray. "You have my number if you have any questions. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with."

"Me too," you think, as Rose shows her out.

Build-n-Share Challenge #172 - Fall Designer Showdown

Challenge Deadline: Monday 30th of November, Midnight CMT.

We had a great show of support for the last challenge. Let's keep it going with the Fall Designer Showdown! Download this shell from the exchange: http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=8784784. Place it at 99 Landgraab Avenue in Sunset Valley. Choose one of the 4 items on the front lawn as your inspiration piece, and then decorate and landscape with that item in mind. The other three items can either be used for your build or deleted for additional funds. The inspiration item must appear somewhere in your build—be creative!

YOU MAY...

**Change the style of doors, windows, stairs, fireplace, columns, and archways provided that you keep the same dimensions and location. A 1-tile door may only be replaced with a 1-tile door; however, three 1-tile windows that are grouped together may be replaced by 3 singles, a single and a 2-tile window, or a 3-tile window.

**Change the style of fencing on the front porch and the 2nd floor, provided that you keep the same layout. Swapping half-walls for fencing is permitted.

**Change any flooring as you see fit.

**Change the style of roofing or even redraw the roof entirely for a different look.

**Add fencing to the exterior lot for a rear patio, boundary fence, or decorative accents.

**Add columns as a decorative feature either for architectural interest or for MOO purposes.

**Designate the spaces as you see fit.

This is the home away from the Ungle's real home of adventuring. Nothing delights them more to uncover artifacts, learn history and explore the world. The Ungle's really wanted a place that had aspects of their travels but specifically with their favourite art/plant, the Tigervine. Therefore it incorporates practical and decorative items from all around the sim world however the colour palate has taken directly from their main focus and appears in every living space per their request.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Harbour Moorings, as the name suggests, has a nautical theme to which end you will know what the inspirational object was. I have used the object a couple of times in the house. The décor used is mainly a palette of blues, greys, white and cream. There is an occasional splash of red here and there to contrast. Wooden floors used throughout to give that luxury ocean liner feel. Tiles and panelling also used throughout. Lots of clutter used again with the nautical theme. I uploaded to the Exchange minus the CC décor I used but used the CC in my photos. My overall final cost includes the cost of the CC.

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: I made a household and designed the home especially for them. The Towlers, Matt and Lani, are sims I had in a little save in Mariner's Reach, a very tiny world made by Johhnywr. They weren't a couple there but are now. Their backstory is that they are a young professional couple relocating to Sunset Valley for Matt's work. He went to college in Sunset Valley and then moved to Mariner's Reach a short while after graduating to work and enjoy island life. Lani is a native of the island, and this is her first time to the mainland. Even though she's very excited for this new adventure, and looking forward to changing seasons and a larger town, Matt is concerned she won't adjust. He wants everything to be perfect when she arrives in town. So, for him it's all about what Lani likes and needs. However, after a little digging, it becomes apparent that this selfless husband has some challenges ahead and adjustments to make, too.

Their home includes an art studio for Lani, who will be working free lance from their home, as well as a workout area where she can practice her dancing she does on the side. She loves turquoise and any kind of flowers, and Matt wants to make sure to include plenty of both to make her feel at home.

Matt eventually makes known that he likes "green, I suppose, any shade." From his wardrobe, it appears he favors drab. He's a computer gaming designer by profession but has always been an active, outdoorsy kind of guy. He loves water sports but prefers to go to the beach or out on the water and really doesn't think they'll make use of a pool at home. He works from the office but sometimes brings work home, needing "only a spot to park my laptop." In addition to swimming and surfing, he has an interest in the martial arts but thinks he can just stop at the gym if he wants on the way home from the office. Because it has to be a challenge to put in long hours at the office, plus overtime and home, and STILL maintain the active lifestyle he loves, he gets a small home office and a part of the work-out area upstairs dedicated to his martial arts equipment.

The Towlers like the traditional style of the house at 99 Landgraab that they managed to nab right after the shell was completed. They don't want it to stand out too much from its 1960's (?) modern style neighborhood, however. Their meager furnishings have arrived and are stored in the garage. They are mostly contemporary, which Matt says they like.

The other members of the household are Lani's two cats, Sukey and Lio. They couple be concentrating on their careers and there won't be time for a family for a while. They'd like the extra bedrooms to be appointed for expected frequent guests.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: The chosen inspiration object will be obvious as it's used frequently. Lani's dancing inspired the choice. Two other inspiration objects were also used in the build, only once each however.
Description included with the exchange upload: BnS 172 Fall Designer Showdown - Designed and decorated with Matt and Lani Towler in mind. The Towlers have recently moved to Sunset Valley from the islands. They're very much looking forward to living on the mainland and experiencing the changing seasons, but they don't want to leave their old life completely behind. The house includes an artist's studio, office, a work out area with dance bar and martial arts equipment. No third-party CC, some CAP.

Morton Salt started his life as a professional surfer. Later he enlisted in the Navy and become obsessed with boats and ships. After having a son, Morty, with his now deceased (thank goodness), nagging ex-wife, Regina Irene Pinafore, Morton decided he needed a change. That was when he took up treasure hunting on the high seas. His wife was unimpressed and promptly divorced him. Morton, who preferred living any where his wife was not, was not phased by his divorce. Instead, he doubled his efforts to find sunken plunder and started tomb raiding as a side hobby. Ultimately, he proved his ex-wife wrong and made enough money to actually retire in his mid-fifties as a multi-millionaire. She died of frustration for not holding out for half of his new income. Not long after he retired, he was asked to host a treasure hunting series on SIMS 10, the Channel of Life. It was while hosting this series that he met Tyanna. She was working in the weather department as a secretary, and she was on the prowl for a rich man. She scooped Morton up and they had a whirl-wind affair. His son Morty had been married for nearly ten years by then and had twin girls. Morty was all for his father hooking up with a hot chick; his wife, Serena, saw through the sham and called Tyanna several choice names. The two women from then on have held harsh feelings each towards the other. When Serena and Morty announced the news that Morton was again to be a grandfather, Tyanna announced that she was also with child. Morton, being a gentleman (with questionable tastes), immediately married her. Thus Tyanna accomplished her life's goal and had time to start looking around for the next rich man to tie around her little finger. Soon after the two babies were born, a storm sent Morton's yacht, the Floating Mirage, to the bottom of the sea. With no where else to live, the were forced to move in with his son's family. Morty had recently purchased an old barn and was just beginning renovations to update it into a modern home for his family. Needless to say, there was a huge lack of room in the house, especially for the ladies. When Morton spied this new house for sale, he was only to glad to get out of hot water and into a new bed of his own with his wife! After all, as Morton says, "She may come across as cheap, but she is good at **edit**. And that is all that really matters. Oh, and she is a good cook, too."

Inside, the furnishings remind one of the beach and the waves chasing up to one's feet. The home is spacious, and the layout is very user-friendly. Included in this three bedroom/three bath home is a laundry room, pantry with wine racks, fishing out of your back door, and a second family area upstairs!

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: The family I made for this one are Erika and Annalee Walker with their infant daughter Tranquility. Erika is an aspiring painter who encouraged by her loving wife Annalee to quit her job in the corporate world and chase after the arts full time while being a stay at home mom for Tranquility. Annalee is going to be a doctor, she wants to help people with that huge heart of hers, but she is also the practical one of the bunch and knows that the profession she has chosen will keep her away from her family sometimes.

This house had been built by Annalee's great-grandfather who immigrated from China. It had been passed to the eldest child ever since and her family gave it to her under the condition that she get married and get a good job. Boy were they surprised when she married a woman instead of a man, but the heart wants what the heart wants and in time Annalee's parents have come to love Erika like a daughter.

Hopefully I will have enough time and desire to live their actual sim lives for a while instead of writing their story in my head and will include a link if I make it before the deadline.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Well I hope this will be obvious from the pictures, but my inspiration object was the folding screen. I wanted to create something that was very different from the shell while still following (Most) of the rules. I think I managed to mess up the fencing somewhere and also I'll admit to using walls to create the roof, but I feel like that could fall into a loophole because we were allowed to redraw the roof. Anyway I wanted this to feel sophisticated and clean, but also homey and livable at the same time. To that effect I tried to use the screens to make "rooms" or sections that could feel more intimate without cutting the space off completely from the other spaces. To me this is really what the screens mean, they are tall and wide enough to define a space, but also have holes that allows for the spaces to breathe together. Alright that's about it hope you enjoy.

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: The Baileys are a family looking for a spacious home where they can live the suburban dream in modern comfort. Wife Tess is an investigative journalist who required an office for her to work from home. Husband Don is a surgeon that wanted a sanctuary away from the doctor’s office where he can entertain & relax with his family. This home also has plenty of room for their two kids. Percy who takes after his father in being the little genius he is, has more than enough room to store his many beloved books. His sister Cloe has a bedroom that is the perfect teen girl hangout for that social butterfly to spread her wings.

The geometrical cutouts & sleek lines led me to create a modern home with a surprise around every corner. The bright color palette & bold furniture designs I used are reminiscent of a retro-mod design that I tried to keep throughout the home. With my design choices & use of the screens I hoped to create a home that is both functional & fun.

Build-n-Share Challenge #173 - Searching for Hygge

It is a blustery, dreary day as you walk the few blocks to meet your next client for coffee. The sky is a depressing shade of gray, and the steady drizzle is making you shiver despite your best efforts at bundling up. The weather cannot dampen your high spirits, though. A couple of months ago, you were almost certainly closing your firm's doors for good and heading elsewhere in search of work. But the Sunset Valley community rallied to keep your tiny ship afloat.

You step into the small cafe, immediately wrapped in warmth and the aroma of hot beverages and freshly baked treats. Your stomach gives a tiny Pavlovian growl. The barista behind the counter is cheerful as she hands over your latte and a flaky, buttery croissant. Carefully, you weave your way among tables filled with chattering friends and students pouring over dog-eared tomes. There is an empty booth near the front window, its wood worn from years of use. You settle in, wrapping both hands around your warm mug, and watch the passersby on the sidewalk.

After a few minutes, a slender blonde woman enters the cafe, the doorbell tinkling in a gust of icy wind. Her eyes scan the room until they land on you. She makes her way to your table, graceful somehow despite the throng of patrons. “Hello!” she says with a lilting accent as she slides into the other side of the booth. “I am Elin Dahl. We spoke briefly yesterday on the phone.” Elin's fair skin is pink high on her cheekbones from the chill outside, her hair in a thick plait over the shoulder of her cream cable knit sweater.

“Yes, of course! My assistant, Rose, had business to tend to in Twinbrook yesterday,” you say. “It's so nice to put a face to the voice. You said you and your husband want to build a small home. What did you have in mind?”

“My husband, Nikolaj and I recently moved here from Denmark. We have traveled all over the world for several years for our jobs and have finally decided to settle here in Sunset Valley. It's just the two of us, so we'd really like something to feel like...'Hygge.'”

“I'm sorry. What is 'hooga' exactly? I'm not familiar with the term.”

Elin laughs a bit, her gray-blue eyes sparkling. “Oh, it is a Danish word that does not translate well into English. I suppose the closest word would be...coziness? Hygge is more of a feeling, an atmosphere. The winter nights in Denmark are long and dark. We spend a lot of time indoors, bundled up under blankets by the fire with warm drinks, good food, and lots of candlelight. Many things can be Hygge. A small dinner party with friends is Hygge. Sharing a bottle of nectar with a loved one is Hygge. This cafe is very Hyggelig.”

You nod, starting to understand this fascinating concept. “So a small, cozy home that feels like a hug. How many bedrooms and bathrooms will you need?”

“Two bedrooms and at least one bath. Maybe an extra for guests,” Elin says. “We need a dining area large enough for small dinner parties, but not overly large. Nikolaj is a freelance journalist and I am a photographer, so we need some sort of office space. It does not need to be a separate room, though. We love little nooks where we can tuck into a good book or read the paper. There must be a fireplace and comfortable seating. We would love to have the home completed in time to throw a New Year's party with our closest friends. Is that possible?”
Jotting a few final notes down, you say, “Start planning your party, Elin!”

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: This home is built to reflect a small Danish cottage with two bedrooms and a washing machine included in the bathroom. The smaller bedroom doubles as a studio with an easel and desk. Someone with a photographer's eye has already placed some great photos on the wall. The open floor plan around a central fireplace keeps you cozy where ever you are and works very well for social gatherings. Out back is a private patio with sauna, a clothes line, a vegetable patch, and some fruit trees. No cc. No CAP. No spawners.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I tried keeping Elin and Nikolaj's eco-friendliness in mind while building this. I did give them a trash compactor and a washer, but no dishwasher and no dryer. There's a clothesline at the front of the lot by the pine tree for drying the newly washed clothes. Also, there's no electrical light in the house. Every single room is filled with candles and candelabres. The stormlamps hanging outside by the frontdoor, the gardening area and the balcony all use candles. I have allowed for the minimal amout of electrical devices. There is a computer and an oldfashioned stereo with turntable in the living room. And of course, the washer, trash compactor and fridge. I made a parking spot under the balcony, for when Elin and Nikolaj has guests. There's plenty of room in the kitchen to set up a Christmas Tree if a Gifting party is hosted and there's good room for a Feast table at the wall opposite the dining table in the dining room.
In the enclosed gardening area there's also a sprinkler. And I left 3 perfect quality plants there, lettuce, grapevine and a tomato plant. I've hidden the outdoor trashcan in a tiny shack attached to the rear of the house.
I didn't add a lot of decor and clutter, since I figure Elin will be taking pictures or creating paintings to adorn the walls with. There's quite a few small plants throughout the house and no coffeetable, to leave room for Elin and Nikolaj having a slowdance to the sound of the old vinyl albums.
All appliances are upgraded to unbreakable. Those that already were got upgraded to selfcleaning where possible.
I did leave a little surprise (as I usually do) on a surface somewhere in the house. I hope the lovely couple enjoys it!

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: What's small and cozy? The answer is a cottage. So I built a cottage, I tried to keep it fairly simply and functional with the open floor main level and the writing nook at the top of the stairs. I also added a couple of sunrooms in case anyone wanted to feel immersed in nature without actually going outside. This build is fairly straightforward and the landscaping simple, but to me that was kind of the point. After all cozy and homey places aren't perfect. Sometimes they are even a little bit of a mess, but it's a lovely mess. Hope you enjoy.

Build-n-Share Challenge #174 - Phoenix Rising

You open the package on your desk, carefully parting layers of snow-white tissue paper to find a framed copy of a feature article written about your firm and published in your beloved Dwell magazine. Nikolaj and Elin Dahl were so pleased with the job you did on their new home that they collaborated on the article, Nikolaj singing your praises and Elin showcasing some of your more recent builds in a full-color spread. Tucked inside is a small folded note card that reads, “Thank you for helping us find a little Hygge in a strange land. We are forever grateful. Wishing you the happiest of new years! Love, Elin and Nikolaj”

Rose startles you with a tap on your office door. “Your 10:30 is here already. She’s a little early. Should I send her in, or are you busy?”

“Oh!” you say, glancing at your watch. Nine-fifty-eight. She’s early indeed. “That’s fine, Rose. You can go ahead and send her in.” You hastily clear your desk, mentally picking out the perfect patch of wall upon which to hang your new gift.

A somewhat unkempt young woman enters your office, the proud jut of her chin at odds with her torn, stained jeans and tangle of chestnut hair. Are those bits of leaves in her hair? She sets down a worn knapsack and a tattered bed-roll before extending a red, wind-chapped hand to you. “I’m Tess. Tess...Barrett.” She says her last name hesitantly, and you wonder why for a moment when it hits you.

“Barrett? Any relation to Francis and Bitty Barrett of Bridgeport?” you say, thinking of the high society couple and their opulent waterfront villa just across the bay from downtown Bridgeport. At the mention of their names, the young woman’s eyes flash before she takes a deep breath.

“They are my parents. Or were.”

“Were? What happened, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“Well, as I’m sure you’re aware, my father is the head of the board at Sacred Spleen Memorial Hospital in Bridgeport. Ever since I was a little girl, he has groomed me to become a doctor like him, buying me medical textbooks and even a model skeleton for my 8th birthday in hopes that I would follow in his footsteps. Nevermind that I cannot stand the sight of blood. I have tried for years to make him understand that I will never be a doctor, but he just won’t listen. When I got my acceptance letter to the art school at Sims University, I hoped that he would finally let go and realize that I’m meant to be an artist rather than a surgeon. Instead, he went into a blind fury, declaring that the only way he would pay for my degree was if it was a medical degree. I pleaded with my mother to help me change his mind, but she was too busy with her bottles of expensive nectar to be of any use. So I told Francis in no uncertain terms would I ever go to medical school. And that’s when he disowned me.”

“Wow, I cannot…” you breathe, unable to complete the thought, mind reeling at this young woman’s story. “How long have you been on your own?”

“It’s been one year to the day since he threw me out with nothing but a backpack of clothes and the money I had in my wallet,” Tess says, her eyes flashing again.

“A year? Where have you been living since then?” you ask, flabbergasted.

“I haven’t really had a place of my own. I’ve slept on park benches, friends’ couches, and even in the library. I’ve showered and washed my clothes in the restroom at the community pool. I told myself I would spend a year trying to find ways to make money and save enough to buy myself a small place to live...maybe even finally go to college to earn my art degree. I have scraped together enough for a small home, and I’m hoping you can help me stretch every simoleon.”

“That’s just...incredible! Ms. Barrett, I would be honored to build your first home. My firm and I are very adept at using cost-saving techniques and maximizing our clients’ money. What is it that you’re looking for exactly?”

“I have already purchased a small 10x10 lot, so it’s going to be a tiny house. I need one bedroom, one bathroom, a functional kitchen/eating space, a living room, and somewhere to work on my art. I’m trying to build my portfolio to re-apply to Sims University in the fall, and maybe get a scholarship. Oh, and if there is any way to work in my own laundry area, that would be fantastic!”

“I can have it ready for you in one month’s time. Does that work for you?”

“It does. Thank you for your help. I will be in touch.” Tess shakes your hand again, hoists her meager belongings onto her back, and strides out of your office with her head held high.

The Brief:
This is an unusual challenge to kick off the new year. You must make Tess Barrett (artistic, brave, charismatic, friendly, and frugal) and play her for up to a full Sim-year, not to exceed 40 in-game days. You must move Tess onto a 10x10 lot of your choice, in a world of your choice. It may be necessary to build a temporary structure in Edit Town to move her in, and then demolish it so the lot is empty again. Once she is moved onto her 10x10 empty lot, delete anything in her inventory, including her camera if you have WA. She should only have her high school diploma and her cell phone. Then, using the FamilyFunds cheat, set her household funds to $300. To do this, type CTRL-SHIFT-C and enter “testingcheatsenabled true” in the cheat box without the quotes. Then open the cheat box again and type “familyfunds barrett 300” without the quotes. Turn off testing cheats (testingcheatsenabled false). Then you have up to 40 Sim days to play Tess as a homeless sim, finding ways to fulfill her basic needs while making as much money as you can. You may not travel to university, the future, or a vacation world; Tess must live on the streets in whichever town you will be building her micro house. You may use sleeping bags and the tent in buydebug, or befriend other Sims so you can sleep over. You will have to be very creative. No cheating to raise her meters or artificially increase her relationships! Your budget is whatever you have managed to earn at the end of 40 Sim-days (or whenever you stop if you can’t play that long). Then, with that money, build her a micro house including:

-Budget is based on what you earn by playing Tess Barrett
-10x10 lot (this is free, does not come out of your budget)
-one bedroom
-one bathroom
-kitchen/dining space
-living room
-art space
**bonus laundry room, if the budget allows

Tess Barrett is artistic, brave, charismatic, friendly, and frugal. She is a Sagittarius who loves the color green, electronica music, and autumn salad. She wants to be a Master of Arts. When her father insisted on her being a doctor, she left home to follow her dream.
Tess did everything she could to get money without actually getting a job. She collected flowers, rocks and gems, and insects. She scraped honey and beeswax from the beehives at Aleister's Elixirs & Sundries. She fished. She got her skills up so her paintings sold well. Tess's gardening produce got her money, too. She dived into piles of junk and sold whatever she found. Her boyfriend sent her gifts, as did store owners when her celebrity status got high enough. She took all the opportunities she could to make money.
At the end of her 38 day year (cut short due to pregnancy), she was a 4-star celebrity. Her painting skill was up to level 8, and her last painting sold for $734. After selling all her gifts and produce, etc, she had gathered up $119,783 to spend towards a new home and college.

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: After Tess was disowned by her father, she moved to Sunset Valley for a new start. She took up a part-time job working at a cemetery. She figured since she wouldn't actually be handling the bodies, it was a decent job that paid well enough to bring her closer to her dream. After getting a job she searched around town for facilities to use & discovered that the local gym not only had showers, but a kitchen, comfy lounge chairs by the pool & a pretty nice television in the main workout area. Through the year, Tess made extra money collecting & selling produce, honey, rocks & picking through garbage. Although it wasn't her favorite way to earn extra cash, she found herself dumpster diving quite a lot & salvaging treasures that many thought where trash, but to her, was a step closer to the life she'd always dreamed of having. She befriended a lonely widow, Agnes Crumplebottom & they became quite good friends. Sometime Agnes even let Tess spend the night. Tess finally decided that the drawing table she'd been using in the thrift store wasn't efficient enough to make real work, or she finally purchased an easel. On the morning of day forty, Tess had $53,719 to spend on her dream home & start her new life.

“Rose,” you say to your phone, finger on the intercom button. “Would you please block my schedule for Tess Barrett’s housewarming party on the evening of the 8th?”

“Of course,” Rose chirps back. “Also, your ten-o'clock is here.”

“Thank you, Rose. Send him in.” You tuck Ms. Barrett’s handmade watercolor invitation into your latest copy of Architectural Digest, marking an article on flooring trends that has piqued your interest. A dark-haired man enters your office, holding a cherubic little girl in one arm. The flowery diaper bag swung over his shoulder seems incongruous with his stocky build and a strong jaw already darkening with stubble at 10:00 a.m.

“Good morning, Mr. Monaghan,” you say, shaking his one free hand. “And who is this little one?” At your attention, the toddler pops a thumb into her mouth and burrows into her father’s shoulder, one pale aqua eye guardedly watching you beneath strawberry blonde fringe.

“This is Maggie,” Mr. Monaghan replies. He smiles at her, the sadness around his own dark eyes easing a bit. “And please, call me Sean.”

“All right then, Sean, let’s have a seat and discuss how I can help you.” Sean sits across from you, balancing Maggie on his knee and fishing a small, worn stuffed elephant from the diaper bag. Maggie snatches it, eyeing you warily as if you might want to take it from her. “She’s such a beauty,” you say quietly, with a soft smile for the toddler. “She must take after her mum.”

“She does indeed. Looks just like my Colleen did.” The sadness creeps back in around his eyes.

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize.”

“That’s all right. Colleen passed during childbirth. It’s just been Maggie and me ever since.” Sean stares at his daughter for a moment, then clears his throat and squares his shoulders. “We’ve had a bit of a rough go lately. Did you hear about all of the recent flooding in Riverview?” You nod.

“I read about it in the Sunset Gazette. Terrible situation!”

“Well, unfortunately, our home was one of those affected,” Sean says with a heavy sigh. “The damage is so bad that the house has been condemned.”

“How awful!” you exclaim.

“The real kicker is that our insurance company only gave us $17,500 to rebuild. I don’t know how we’re going to relocate with so little. I was hoping you could work some of your magic for us.”

“Wow, that’s a really tight budget. I’m sure we can figure something out though. What are your absolute must-haves?”

“We really don’t need much. Just a modest house with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, kitchen, and dining space. Laundry would be great, but if it isn’t in the budget, I can keep taking our laundry to Sudsy Time like I’ve been doing. I’d like a little outdoor area for Maggie to play. Maybe a sandbox.”

“That sounds feasible,” you reply, jotting a few things down in your notebook. “Are there any other specifications? Style? Location?”

“I don’t really have a preference on style. I’m a simple man. As for location, I’d like access to water since I catch fish for EverFresh. Just not in a flood plain this time.” Sean gives you a wry look, the corner of his mouth curling into the faintest glimpse of a smile.

“I will start working on plans immediately. I believe we could have something move-in ready within your budget by the end of the month. Does that work for you?”

“It does. The sooner, the better!”

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: This lot is placed next to the beach for convenient fishing for Sean, but not too close that he needs to worry about Maggie getting in if left unattended for a minute. The bedrooms and bath are upstairs as well as a really nice-sized balcony perfect for outdoor play. The downstairs offers an open floor plan with counter seating (and a high chair). Free wall and floor coverings, as well as buydebug lights, made this budget build possible. I didn't want to scrimp on the architectural look too much, so I bare bones the furnishings. Sorry, there was not enough money in the budget for laundry (which isn't included in the base game without store content). This is the actual cost without a master builder or depreciation. No cc, no CAP, no spawners, no EPs or SPs.

First of all, I am laughing at myself for including the proximity to the river in the description, as though that has any meaning to someone downloading the lot! For those of us doing the challenge, it means I located it near enough to the river to be convenient for Sean to go fishing. The bend is just far enough from the river and at a high enough elevation that it has never flooded there. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it )

I, too, tried to use some zero cost content in this build, but I just couldn't live with any of the free wallpapers I found for what I had in mind. The interiors are all the 3-simoleon pool wallpaper, and the exterior is the cheapest paint (4, I think?), except for a little splurge in the roof gables. I did manage to include a clothes dryer, but at the cost of using (gasp) a fire detector in the kitchen and a couple deco items - and I truly wanted to use the fish wall sculpture above the living room shelves, because I was sure Sean would love it!
Edited to add: I see some of my pictures still show a potted fern in the living room area. I replaced it with the shell planter from Seasons, which shows in some other pictures.

This small yet charming house features 2 bedrooms, one full bath and a laundry room. The open concept living/kitchen makes this small house seem grand! At under 17,500 this charmer really boasts affordability! NO CC... Some of my pictures show a yellow hanging light in Maggie's room, I replaced this with a pink one to better match and it is included in the uploaded lot.
I wanted to go with a simple house because Sean is a simple man. He can always put more stuff in it as life goes on. I picked Aurora Skies because it has plenty of fishing spots so he can continue his job catching fish, and what a great neighborhood to raise children.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: This cozy little home has two bedrooms and one bath. It features lots of outdoor space with a partial wrap-around porch as well as a deck under an arbor. It is also child-friendly with one of the bedrooms being a nursery and an outdoor play area with hopscotch and a sandbox. A perfect place to hang up your fishing hat or start a family close to the shore, all for just under 17,500.
I figure that someone who fishes for a living must love the outdoors, so I wanted there to be a lot of outdoor space, which led to the wrap-around porch and arbor. The grill was also something I really wanted to include and scrimped on a couple other features, like a drying machine, to be able to afford. I also wanted it to feel like Maggie was very much a part of Sean's life, rather than confining her to the nursery, which is why the living room has a toy box and the high chair is in the kitchen. I used in-game photos to add a bit of a personal touch (as well as very cheap decor). I imagine most of them being of Sean's favorite fishing places, with the pictures from his former home of Riverview being right over the bed. The bookcase is stocked with children's and fishing books as well as some skill books I thought might be relevant.
No CC or CAP. Oh, and the appliances are all upgraded. Self-cleaning for the plumbing, fireproof for the stove and clean polymer injection system for the laundry machine. I always forget to mention that in my descriptions.

Built on stilts this home sits high above the flood plain. Two bedrooms upstairs and an open floor plan on the first floor make this little starter feel much larger than it looks. Built for the Build and Share Challenge A River View
I thought it would be fun to make this house above ground level so that in the event of a flood Sean wouldn't ever have to worry again. The first floor is entirely open concept so Maggie can use her walker with ease and then finally totter around easily when she learns to walk.
There is a washer tucked in next to the back door that leads to the laundry line and a little play area. Instead of landscaping with traditional flowers I used vegetables and fruit trees that Sean can harvest and use for bait.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: For this build I kind of latched onto the idea that he wanted to be by a source of water, but not high enough to be swallowed by a flood. My ideal solution to this was to build a lighthouse, after all they are usually built on high ground beside the ocean. Maybe that's just my logic or I just really wanted to build a lighthouse, anyway I wanted it to have a more rustic look, like someone had just moved in and taken the dust covers off the furniture. I wanted it to feel homey and cozy, for that reason as well as the reason that I decided to build a tower with a small budget is why the place it so small. There is a washer machine tucked into the tower, but no dryer, only a close line in the yard beside Maggie's sandbox. Alright I think that's about it, hope you enjoy.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: A 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom bungalow perfect for a small family. There is a small laundry room off the carport, that doubles as a mudroom - a place to hang coats and put shoes. The eat-in kitchen is small, but opens up into the cozy front room. The main bedroom is spacious, while the second bedroom is decorated as a nursery. All the comforts, perfect for a family starting out, for just under 17,500 simoleons. Upgraded and playtested by The Quartet. CC free by aricarai
Budget homes are always a big challenge for me and this one was no different. I wanted to push myself to the limit by focusing on the interior of the home, seeing how much I could put into it with such a small budget all while making it look comfy and cozy.
I chose to go with a bungalow style, to keep Sean and Maggie on one level, making it easier for Maggie to get around to any area of the home and Sean never to be far from her. The exterior is a §0 brick wall covering and the home extends long-ways to accommodate a carport. The backyard is very simple; however, there is a small play area for Maggie and a picnic bench and barbeque in case Sean would like to entertain while still being able to keep an eye on his little one.
Entering the home from the carport to the left, there is a tiny laundry room that also doubles as a mud room in which to hang coats and take shoes off. It is covered in the §0 wall and floor covering.
Moving further into the house from the laundry, is the eat-in kitchen; laid out in a galley-style to maximise space, it also houses a small dining table off of the counter area, with a space for a high-chair for Maggie. In the kitchen is all of the starting out essentials - fridge, stove, sink, and a bin. I put little knick-knacks around to not make it so bare - cookbooks, breadsticks bowl, towel rack, and window coverings. Turning with backs to the kitchen, the front room is in direct line creating fluidity throughout. It has a bookcase, sofa, arm chair, and tv. In order to give a little interest to an otherwise rectangular room, I put all of the furniture at an angle, but still made it close and cozy. In order to decorate, I used a mixture of §0 wall and floor covering and §2 wall covering. Even though I mixed patterns (stripes, brick, and solid), on the walls, I stuck with a calming blue color that would bring the room together as one, but I also wanted to bring in little pops of color in the décor. I tried to create further interest in the room, by using the solid blue color on the walls, floor, and ceiling - in sections. In the front room, there's a walking chair for Maggie, a small stereo, and again, little knick-knacks to make the home look lived in.
Just off of the front room is a full bathroom, decorated with §0 wall and floor coverings. It is a chrome-color scheme and again, I used cheap knick-knacks to make sure it looked lived in and not so sparse.
On the opposite side of the house are two spacious bedrooms, a nursery for Maggie and a masculine master bedroom for Sean. Each room has feature walls, using the §0 wall covering. Sean's room is comfortable, a place where he can relax. It has a bed, dresser, a chair (to sit with Maggie in), a baby monitor, and a vase with his beloved wife's favorite flowers. Maggie's bedroom is perfect for a little girl growing up - on this I spared little expense as I wanted to show that Maggie is the most important thing in Sean's life. It has toys for learning, a crib, baby swing, potty for toilet training and a changing table.
The house is situated so that there is no chance of flooding, but close enough to the water where Sean can walk out of the backyard and reach the water within a few minutes for some early morning fishing.
I had a lot of fun building this house, keeping in mind the wants and requirements of Sean and Maggie. Thank you for the challenge!

“Rose?” You call over the intercom, preparing to ask her a question.

“Yes, it is the time you are suppose to have the meeting. No, she isn’t here yet. No, she hasn’t called.” Rose says with an amused chuckle. She knows you so well.

“Oh. Well. Thanks.” Glancing at your clock, you shrug, and try to pass the waiting time with a game of solitaire. As you struggle to find a place to put that black 8, an icon flashes up on your screen.

“Tchnobabbl16 wants a chat.” you read, before looking very confused. “What?” Hesitantly, you click the accept icon. After a few minutes, during which a program you didn’t know you had updates, a window opens and a young lady smiles at you.

She has black hair, liberally streaked with candy pink, matching her candy pink lipstick. Her vibrantly green eyes peer at you through candy pink frames. “Sorry I’m late for the appointment. I was hoping to get out of class in time to meet with you, but I got hit with a last minute assignment. My name is Tashira Nuvalis.” At seeing your confused expression and not getting a response she rolls her eyes and smiles again. “First time on video chat? Just speak up. Your computer has a built in microphone.”

“Right. Its nice to meet you Miss Nuvalis.” You say, struggling to regain some dignity. “What can I do for you?”

“I need a new place. I heard you're the best, so I came to you.”

“Okay. Will it be you and your parents?” you ask diplomatically.

She sighs, as if exasperated with that question. “No. I’m emancipated. Mom and Step-dad live in Appaloosa Plains. I hate the country. Since I make enough money as a comic book author and YouTuber, I decided to beat feet. My grandmother left me 20k to get started.”

You nod, pulling out pen and paper. “What would you like?”

“An apartment in a city. At least 1 bedroom. Need the basics and a place to write and film my vlogs.” She thinks, “Downtown would be perfect if you could manage it. If it's too expensive, I don’t mind going a little farther out. But no suburbs!”

“That sound doable. Any other preferences?”

“Well my favorite color is pink, and I love watching the sunset, so a balcony would be nice, but not required. I cant think of anything else.” She says, toying with a pen. Suddenly a bell rings, making you both jump. “Crud. That’s the bell. I have to go. When would my new place be ready?”

“Give me 2 weeks.” You assure her confidently. You’ve done harder things in 2 weeks.

“Great. See ya!” The window closes, leaving you alone in your office. After jotting down some notes, you head out to tell Rose about this unusual appointment.

I wanted Tashira’s apartment to reflect her youthfulness, while still showing the sophistication & maturity that comes with striking out on her own at a young age. This colorful studio apartment has lovely views & a spacious, open floorplan. I’ve used a bold color scheme which includes various shades of her favorite color (pink.) She is also a techie, so I’ve kept a more modern style, with high-end appliances & sleek designs. There is a small office off of the bedroom for writing & filming her vlogs. A large sectional faces the patio & allows for her to invite friends over & entertain. I especially thought the glass wall in the entrance would be a nice way for natural light to be let in without obstructing the view. Outside I have provided a grassy patch where she can watch the sunset & take in the city around her.

Build-n-Share Challenge #177 - The House of Dolls

Challenge Deadline: Tuesday, May 31st, 2016, Midnight CST

“I'm so pleased that you love your new apartment, Tashira,” you say to the video image of your most recent client. “Talk to you soon!” Tashira gives a quick wave before the webcam video freezes, and a message pops up on screen that reads Tchnobabbl16 has left the chat. You try to remember how to exit the chat yourself when Rose buzzes through on the intercom.

“Uh..your next appointment is here. But also not here,” Rose says.

“What on Earth does that mean?”

“Well, you received a rather large delivery with a note to call a Miss...Marion Etta—really? that can't be her actual name!—upon receipt of the delivery.”

“Rose, you're being so cryptic. Would you please bring the package into my office?”

“Sure, but I'll need you to hold open the door for me.”

You swing open your office door just in time to see the back of Rose, who is wheeling a cart with an enormous antique dollhouse on it. You hastily move out of the way so Rose can maneuver it through the door, barely clearing the door frame on either side. She parks it near your drafting table and fiddles with a bundle of wires for a moment.

“I think...maybe,” Rose is peering at a piece of paper, rotating it all around and biting her lip in concentration. “Yes! Got it!” She flips a switch on a little box, and suddenly, the dollhouse lights up.

“Ohhhh!” you breathe, as you move closer to see the tiny brass coach light on the porch, the delicate glass chandelier over the dining table, and tiny Tiffany lamps illuminating the three story structure. The furnishings are exquisitely detailed, with real fabric on the bedding and tufted sofas, miniature china saucers and teacups on the hand-carved coffee table, and what appears to be a functioning grandfather clock all in 1:12 scale. The walls have actual wallpaper on them, and the roof has individual scalloped shingles that were each glued on by hand. Someone spent a great deal of time and money on this dollhouse. “Rose, may I have the note that accompanied this stunning piece?” Rose passes you a pale peach card that smells faintly of lilacs. You hurriedly punch the numbers into your office phone, not even bothering to sit down, wondering where this next job is going to take you.

“Hello?” Marion Etta answers promptly on the second ring, her voice quiet. You introduce yourself, exclaiming over the incredible Victorian replica that is currently occupying the center of your office. Miss Etta makes a pleased sound. “I apologize for such an unusual appointment, but I'm afraid I don't get out much. I find the company of others somewhat distressing; however, it is Important to me that you see my beloved dollhouse in person.”

“It's beautiful, Miss Etta. Please tell me how I can help you and how the dollhouse relates.”

“I was a sickly child, raised by my grandmother who kept me indoors except for doctors appointments. She hired a private tutor to teach me as I wasn't well enough to attend public school. For my eleventh birthday, my grandmother gave me the kit for this dollhouse. I spent years building it, pouring over catalogs for the perfect furnishings, and then years more playing with it. My grandmother recently passed away and left me her entire estate. I have decided that I would like to use some of that money to build a life-sized dollhouse for myself. It doesn't need to be an exact replica, but I would like you to consider the dollhouse as inspiration.”

“It's a beautiful inspiration piece. What are your specifications?”

“I would like two or three stories, Victorian architecture—either Queen Anne or Second Empire, none of that Gothic revival—with a parlor, formal dining room, enclosed kitchen, and two or three bedrooms. I don't care much for technology, but I do love the more classical arts, particularly piano and watercolors. The furnishings should fit the period.”

“That sounds like a plan. We can have it completed within the month. Does that work for you?”

“It does, thank you. I will be in touch.”

You hang up the phone and are suddenly aware that Rose is inches from your computer screen, staring intently at an old photograph. “What are you looking at, Rose?”

“Well, she's just such a peculiar client that I decided to Google her. I found her grandmother's obituary with a photograph of the two of them together. If I didn't know better, I would swear it was taken more than a century ago. Also, from what I've read so far, it appears that she legally changed her name when she turned eighteen.” Rose rolls your office chair aside. “Look.”

Sure enough, there is a black-and-white photo of an unsmiling elderly woman, spine ramrod straight, in a high-necked Victorian gown and a feathered fascinator atop her perfectly coiffed hair. Next to her is a rail-thin girl with eyes that seem almost comically too big for her face, flaxen hair in a cascade of ringlets, wearing layers upon layers of ruffles and bows. In her hand, peeking out from her voluminous skirts, is a tiny doll with flaxen curls and a dress of ruffles and bows. The caption reads, "Ms. Eleanor Shivley and her granddaughter, Julia Applebaum, circa 1982."

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Straight out of the 1860's comes this Second Empire house. Two bedrooms and one and a half baths were the height of luxury back in the day. A formal parlor with grand piano and formal dining room are the main rooms of the first floor along with the entry and kitchen. Upstairs is an informal sitting room for painting and reading. In the master bedroom there is a secret ladder leading to what used to be Miss Marion's childhood playroom. Landscaping is minimal due to the fact that she really doesn't like to be outside much.

Marion Etta is unstable, artistic, a Virgo, a technophobe who hates the outdoors, and childish. She loves pink, classical music, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Her life goal is to own a private museum.
Raised by her doting Grandmother, Marion was always treated as if she was a porcelain doll who might break at any time.She was a sickly child whom her Grandmother would not let attend school, so Marion did not have any friends. Instead, she turned to her doll house and dolls. She lived through them to such an extent that she forgot about the real world entirely until her Grandmother passed away. Since then, her mental stability has been questionable, and she has had to visit the hospital multiple times for her mental health.
The times Marion is happiest are when she is playing with her dolls and doll house. Even now it is her favorite thing to do-even though she is all grown up. Her clothes and demeanor usually reflect her favorite past time. Even her dreams reveal that, aside from a sparkling clean house, Marion wants a colorful fantasy life that has a happy ending!! (possibly with a werewolf or yeti and the Loch Ness monster...weird)

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: The house is modeled after the front part of a large Queen Anne style Victorian. I used a "flat back" to the house, since that is what you would most likely see in a doll house. In Victorian times, doll houses were set up with the kitchen and dining room on the first floor, the parlor and billiards room on the second floor, and bedrooms on the third floor and possibly in the attic. Since we did not need a billiards room, and having a tight budget, I started the bedrooms on the second floor since I was able to place a parlor on the first floor.
I used cheery, feminine colors that would attract a young girl. Marion's room includes the doll house and a large doll. Outside areas were set up, since they might come with the doll house, but Marion will not be using them.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: She's a Queen Anne Painted Lady, very colorful, with a cheerful palette. All the wall paper is the same style, just varying shades and hues of pretty colors. The wllpaper all has the same creme color running through it as well to match the ceiling. I love the almost symmetrical, but not, look to the house and I think it has a very realistic layout that should play well. Again, I made this in a base game save with only store stuff added.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS:
I went with a Second Empire Build. To give it more of a dollhouse feel, I made all the back walls glass and added extra walls coming out at different angles to look like open doors. Like a dollhouse that has compartments that open out for every room. So, the build looks like a child could sit in the back yard (a giant child) and play with the house-- but it is a fully functional house with windows instead of open walls. The large windows give gorgeous views of the ocean and beach behind the house.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: For this build I wanted to build a Queen Anne style house which then involved a lot of time spent getting the roofs to look natural. I also underestimated the size of the house to the size of the lot ratio and as a result my landscaping is a bit lack luster. For the inside I tried to work with a more traditional closed floor plan giving all the main rooms their own space which adds to the coziness of the spaces. This build has three livable stories, but only two are furnished due to budget and space requirements. I wanted this whole build to have a Victorian feel, homey and proper while still with a touch of whimsy that dollhouses inspire. Hope you enjoy.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: My entry is done in Second Empire Victorian, I used roof decor to create a more regal look despite the modest size of the home. The structure stands three stories high, although the attic is simply storage, it could always be converted into another room. There is also roof access from there, though i didn't do much with this space due to budget & the fact that Marion wouldn't like to go outside much anyway. I used pastels & jewel tones (both color palettes of the Victorian Era) throughout my build to create balance between refined propriety & child-like whimsy. I tried to keep the rooms cozy & well decorated without over-cluttering. Since Marion Etta prefers to stay inside, I included an atrium at the back of the house filled with large windows & greenery, so she can enjoy sunlight while she paints. The kitchen includes a baker's station, as I figured that is another fitting hobby Marion would partake in. Overall I feel this life-sized dollhouse is the perfect place for Ms. Etta & her (what I can assume is massive) doll collection.

This charming Second Empire Victorian "dollhouse" Features 1 and 1/2 bathrooms, 3 spacious bedrooms
an eat in kitchen with access to a wraparound porch,
a formal parlor and dining room as well as an art room/office, and a third story playroom.
I used a classic Victorian dollhouse for inspiration set in Second Empire Style
(mainly because I really wanted to use the Mansard roofs:) I havent used this style yet and usually build Gothic Revival and Queen Anne)
I left the walls mostly bare so Marion Etta can fill them with her own paintings once she is settled
(also because of budget issues)
I included a third story playroom so Marion can have tea with her "friends" and I just like the thought
of a "secret" place that children can have to be creative. There is also a storage room on the third floor
mainly due to budget restrictions.
Each room is decorated in traditional victorian style. Marion's favorite color is lilac so I tried to incorporate that in
each room with the exception of the guest bedroom and first floor powder room.
I did include some outdoor seating just incase Marion felt the need for some fresh air.

You sit on the edge of the fountain in the middle of Central Park, enjoying the warmth of the sunshine, the fresh spring air, and the peals of laughter from the nearby playground. It’s a beautiful day, after what has seemed like an entire month of rain. Your eyes close in momentary bliss.

“Pardon me?” says a deep, smooth voice from somewhere near your left. You open your eyes to see your next client standing there, sunlight gleaming on his chocolaty skin. You hurry to your feet, shaking his hand firmly. “Lionel Young, pleased to meet you.”

“Mr. Young, it’s so good of you to meet me at the park today. It’s been so dreary lately that I hated to spend another minute inside, work or no work.”

“Agreed. A little sunshine is good for the soul.” You motion for Lionel to be seated, watching him fold his large frame with an unexpected grace. “That’s sort of what I wanted to talk to you about,” he says, with a smile that deepens the laugh lines at his eyes.

“Oh? I’m intrigued! Tell me how I can help you.”

“I teach Honors Simlish and coach JV basketball at the Community School for the Gifted. Now that school is almost out for the summer, I have some time for a project I have been mulling over.” Lionel pulls out his smartphone, swiping his fingers over the screen, until he shows you a photo of a gorgeous dark-skinned woman, with tight raven coils, deep brown eyes and a wide, warm smile. “This is my wife, Arden. She’s a hospice nurse with Sacred Spleen Memorial.”

“It takes a special kind of person to work in hospice. That must be a heart-wrenching job.”

“It is. And Arden is special.She works very hard. In addition to her job, she has also spent the last year caring for her elderly mother, who recently passed away.”

“I’m so sorry,” you murmur.

“Thank you. It’s been hard on both of us, but Arden especially. They were very close. What I’d like to do is take her away for a while, somewhere warm where she can sink her toes into the sand and recharge. Being a caregiver is incredibly taxing. When Arden’s mother passed, she left us a decent sum of money. I’d like to use some of it to surprise Arden with our own vacation home.”

“I would love to create the perfect little getaway for you and Arden,” you say, thinking about hammocks and palm trees and fruity little drinks with umbrellas. You could use a vacation yourself… “What did you have in mind?”

“It’s really just a rough idea. Something warm and tropical with an ocean view, with outdoor areas where we can hear the waves and taste the salt in the air. It will just be the two of us -- we don’t have any children -- so we only need one bedroom and bathroom. I would like for both to be indulgent, spa-like, so Arden can really relax. A small kitchen with a dining space and a living room area. I think I’d like it all to be fairly open, so we can see the ocean from just about anywhere.”

“Do you have any preferences on style or color?”

“I’m not much of an architecture buff. Just something relaxed and comfortable. Soothing colors would be nice. I have $35,000 to spend. Will that work?”

“Mr. Young, pack your bags. You will be relaxing in the sun and sand by the end of the month!”

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: Designed as the perfect getaway, this little house has an open plan downstairs, featuring a large kitchen, a dining area that can sat four people, and a large living room full of bookcases. The house has wonderful relaxing views of the ocean from all angles, and has a lovely seating area out the back, surrounded by blossoming flowers and crashing waves; the perfect area for sims to relax and snooze under the summer sun.
Upstairs is a single bedroom and a large bathroom split into two, allowing more room and privacy. There is also a large upstairs balcony, ready for your sims to furnish and use how they wish. I ran out of money to furnish it myself

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: The lot is right on the beach, with the waves just off the property! Since it is so close to the rather calm coves waves, the house is on stilts. The wood paneling on the exterior are pre-exposed to the weather, so it has a gray patina. Large windows in every room give one unobstructed views of the ocean!! Even the furniture is positioned so as to allow the best views of the water. No electronics were included to allow the owner to fully disconnect from the outside world and relax. The landscaping is natural to the beach. Air conditioning is included, but the numerous windows also can let in a breeze! Parking is off-site.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I wanted to go really for a real "Island Feel" so I have a thatch roof, no doors on the rear of the house so all those lovely trade winds can flow freely. The front of the house is kept rather plain so all the views are from the interior facing the water. The entire second level is devoted to the master bedroom and bath with a spectacular view from the bath tub :)There is a small garden featuring "salad fixin's and an orange and lime tree for those tropical drinks! Check out the picture frame in the bedroom for photos that Lionel took.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I decided to place my lot in Isla Paradiso, a choice mainly inspired by a tile-roofed vacation home I had found, and tried to find some harmony between the island's colorful vibe and the "soothing colors" to be used for the challenge. As mentioned above a 21x15 lot existed at the location I chose, which I replaced with a 20x15. I love the way it overlooks the water and is just uphill from a small beach.
Lot upload description: Overlooking the natural stone arch near Crystal Waters Beach on Isla Paradiso, this open yet private vacation home offers beautiful ocean views in a relaxing setting. LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I ended up building three separate homes for this challenge trying to get the feeling just right. The first one I scrapped because it became too boxy and closed in. The second I tossed because of the same thing. Then I came to this, instead of trying to focus on the spaces I was required to place within the building I decided to focus on the actual feeling I'd been lacking. The logical question I asked myself was what is relaxing, what is the first thing that comes to mind when seeking solace. The answer was water, more specifically running water. So I built a house that had a waterfall. I wanted it to be clean, but also connected to nature and the water. The blue wallpaper along the sides and top are meant to be an almost symbolic waterfall to echo the real one. The second floor catwalk provides access to the waterfall deck and wonderful views. That deck is for when you want to be alone feeling the power of nature whereas the other one is for more casual sitting and conversation. All and all I tried to create a space that was tranquil but also empowering. Hope you enjoy.

Build-n-Share Challenge #179 - Summer Designer Showdown

Welcome to the Summer Designer Showdown! It's like our previous showdowns, but with a twist! Download the foundation from the Exchange to be placed at 72 Water Lily Lane in Sunset Valley (formerly The Monotone), and then choose from one of three Sims as your inspiration. You have one month and $50K Simoleons to create a house that fits the Sim of your choice. We must be able to tell which Sim you chose based on your style of build.

Meet the Sims:


On the left we have Felipe Cardoso who is on his way to becoming a Superstar Athlete. He is athletic, charismatic, a daredevil, a party animal, and a vehicle enthusiast. He is a Leo who loves chili con carne, Latin music, and the color yellow.

In the center we have Dorian Velvet. Dorian is a Gemini who is working toward rock stardom. He is artistic, brooding, dramatic, rebellious, and quite the virtuoso. He loves sushi, Dark Wave music, and the color black.

And finally we have Neil Hawthorne. Neil is building a business empire and positioned to be the next CEO of Sunset Valley. This silver fox is ambitious, a genius, a perfectionist, a schmoozer, and a bit of a snob. This Capricorn prefers porcini risotto, French music, and the color aqua.

Hopefully it painfully evident that I chose to build for Felipe Cardosa (only because I don't have the proper EP's for the other choices).
Before I started building I let Felipe go about with total free will and found out just who he is. Everything about him screams sports, from his daily wishes to his dreams. I also wanted him to have plenty of choices for building his athletic skill so he has everything from a hacky sack to a basketball court.
I also loved that his favorite color was yellow and tried to use it in every room in varying shades from pastel to bright neon. I then discovered his love of automobiles and bought him a fixer upper that he regularly goes out and works on without any prompting from me.
Turns out that Felipe is quite the ladies man . He had a party and spent so much of it flirting with all the female guests that all but one guy left. Then out of the blue he decides to go skinny dipping! Molly French was so mortified she almost drowned! He got some very mixed reactions and Molly ended up safely out of the pool! Whew! Everyone ended up having a wonderful time.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS:
Lot Blurb: This 2 Bedroom 1 Bath Modern home is designed for the up and coming CEO in mind. The main floor boasts an open floor plan with a living room, dining room, kitchen/bar for entertaining and networking with business associates and a small office for working from home. The second floor holds two bedrooms with private balconies, and a shared luxurious bath. Exquisite art can be viewed throughout. The lot is fully landscape and includes a carport and central air.
Details: Designed with a Modern Naturalist aspect. Smooth lines and light woods are accented with organic shapes and greenery. Splashes of aqua have been included throughout, but minimized overall, as it’s quite a bright color, and offset by a complimentary warm red. There is plenty of custom content as the sims base/store content simply did not have the right feel. The first floor is designed as a party and work space, while the second level is strictly for relaxation and intimate conversations. The bath, though shared, is spacious and designed to be a fortress of solitude to ease the stress of a long day of work. Fill the bath with bubbles and know that no one can reach you here. The unique accents and layout are perfect for a perfectionist, snob sim who needs to impress the boss on his climb to the top and enjoy the top quality atmosphere.
Unfortunately, I ran out of time to put some finishing touches on the media, but the images are there.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: This was a fun challenge to work with because in a way there were two foundations that had to be worked around, the actual physical foundation and the sim we chose to build for. I chose to build for Dorian Velvet, I hope this will be obvious from the design itself but regardless I was inspired to go in the rocker direction because I thought that the foundation with all it's pushed and pulled pieces lent itself to a modern, almost musical style. I wanted it to be loud and proud as a structure, but also sheltering and cozy to an extent because the way I thought of my Dorian Velvet was as a true musician. Someone who has recently become famous, but to whom fame was only a byproduct of making music. So while the structure makes a statement, it is also designed to be a home. Sort of a reflection of a man who wears two faces, the public face that everyone knows and the human face that few ever really see. Hope that makes sense and you enjoy.

LOT DESCRIPTION & DETAILS: I'm a bit of a roadie and a huge rock/punk/folk music fan myself, so naturally I picked Dorian. I tried to make the ultimate bachelor pad for an artist who is away a lot, but needs a nice place to come home to write and practice, without making it look like a giant teenage punk's room. Its clean, sharp and modern/cozy with everything he could need. Plenty of stuff to drink around, and on most surfaces you'll find an (empty?) bottle, lots of books for poetic inspiration, several ipods and a huge stereo, and some musical instruments. The decor is a little bit geeky from old Nintendo bits that he played as a kid. There's room for entertaining, so he can come back from gigs and bring other musicians with him to collaborate and party a little bit more in style. I decorated in black and shades of grey, with raw wood and leather, and accents like old, well-loved oriental rugs and bohemian styles. The landscaping is a little bit sparse, to cope with the fact that he's not home enough to really play in the garden and he needs something that can essentially live on its own. I also gave him a dog, Daisy, because dogs are really the only thing that make me as happy as good music does and I imagine he'd feel the same I hope you like it! I really enjoyed building this one and I tried to make it a realistic portrayal of a young rocker's home base.
