Advise for a basic 1650 gaming pc

I am looking to build a basic gaming computer. This isn't a pc that is just going to help me get through the parts shortage, this is going to be my gaming pc that I hope will last say at least 5 years. It is difficult researching a low end gaming pc as most reviewers or those more familiar with pc parts don't like the 1650 range. But money is the great dictator in life and gaming.

My current pc is 7 years old has an i3-4160 CPU @ 3.60GHz and has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 gaming card. My main games are the Sims specifically Sims 3 but Sims 2 and Sims 4 also get played a bit. As well as FSX.

The graphics card can handle the Sims texture is on high but object texture is low and everything else is a mix of low and medium. FSX plays similar. Though I'd like to play more recent games, I'd like to at least be able to play my Sims games with better graphics, as well as improve FSX.

Are these parts any good?

1) INTEL CORE I3 10300 - 3.7 GHZ

2) MSI B460M-A PRO MAINBOARD

3) MSI GTX 1650 Ventus XS
Core/Memory

Boost Clock / Memory Speed
1740 MHz / 8 Gbps
4GB GDDR5
DisplayPort x 1(v1.4a)
HDMI x 1(Supports 4K@60Hz as specified in HDMI 2.0b)
DL-DVI-D x 1

I also want to know if the above graphics card is the more basic/lower end of the 1650 range? And if I could put a bit more money into a graphics card would it be better to wait for stock to come back in?

I also would like to know how good the ventus part is? I've read some comments that it is noisy and that isn't going suit another family member. Should it be a deciding factor?

  • I do not know if it has any truth to it but I read that Intel Core i5 or higher has better performance, especially for a game like TS3 where there is real-time simulation. Besides that, according to this site you should see where that CPU stands among other CPU's for performance comparisons.

The chosen CPU is currently rank 512 in the high-end category. The lower the rank, the better the performance or so supposedly that is.

I would recommend using this site to help you pick out compatible PC parts. Which is what I used when building my first gaming desktop so I know I was not buying something incompatible.

You can also find computer focused websites and/or forums to look up articles and reviews and/or ask questions to those who are more experienced with putting together computers and hardware and so on. Just make sure you do your own homework before just taking anyone's word for it. You can look up specific reviews on YouTube as well and get a variety of different feedback and opinions.

This site also helped me a great deal in picking out a graphics card compatible with TS3 for all expansion and stuff packs.

You have a GTX 750 which says there are 3 with a maybe it can run Island Paradise, Into the Future and Movie Stuff.
I have a GTX 660 with all EP's/SP's and did not have any issues at all with TS3 including maxing out the settings. Not sure as I would think your graphic card being newer would perform better. But then again, as I am still learning, newer does not necessarily equate to better nor does more expensive. But as long as you do your homework thoroughly, you will not have that issue.

Depending on the kind of newer games you want to play, I would check out the recommended system requirements to get an idea of a decent gaming computer.

For example from the game Control:

    Recommended:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    OS: Windows 10, 64-bit
    Processor: Intel Core i5-7600K / AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
    Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660/1060 / AMD Radeon RX 580 AMD | For Ray Tracing: GeForce RTX 2060
    DirectX: Version 12
    Storage: 42 GB available space
Additional Notes: Additional Features: Widescreen support 21:9 / Remappable controls / Uncapped frame-rate / G-Sync / Freesync support
