It does get annoying when they follow the Sim into the bathroom. When the imaginary friend starts walking around after your toddler ages up to child, wait until the child goes to bed. The imaginary friend will go back into doll form near the child's bed and you'll be able to put it back in your child's inventory. The child will still play with it, but it stays in doll form.

Oh, I had much worse problems with the one and only IF I ever had one of my children play with than it just following her around. It came out to where she was reading, and I think she was a teen at that point. It stood there demanding her attention, so I had her tell it to leave her alone. Immediately, the two actions that were in her queue, the chair she was sitting on and the reading action, got plastered over the entire top half of the screen, repeated over and over. That was the last time I ever allowed a child to play with an IF. From that point, until I started using NRaas mods and disabled IF's entirely, I would move all IF's into one of the parents' inventory, then put it behind a tree or bush on the farthest part of the lot from the house as possible. Later, I discovered they could give them to other sims as a gift, so I got them out of my household for good. Now I never get them in the first place.
