I haven't played my sims 3 in a little over a year. I had along term save going and a year ago, it just, randomly started lagging and giving me issues. I was not in a good place in my life and couldn't devote the time needed to trouble shoot Sims 3, so I just put it away and went back to playing Sims 4.
Well, I'm in a better place now and I thought... I'll see what's going on with my Sims 3. I'd like to play my long term save again (it's on about gen 8). Well, now I've got the issue that I can't even get the game to load up. It crashes on load. And I've been out of the Sims 3 troubleshooting game and in the sims 4 troubleshooting game so long, I honestly can't even recall what my first steps should be to fixing my Sims 3.
Can someone please help me get this game loaded. I'd really love to be able to play again. :)

Aha on the three monitors. Did you when you played TS3 prior? How about if we reduce that to one and see what happens?
I played on two monitors a year ago. I've been running dual's for the better part of 3 years now. But the 3rd monitor is a new addition. I can see if it will do anything. :)
Sorry about the triple post... but we have progress!!!
I remembered back when the creator's update first dropped, I had an issue with RTSS and sims 3 crashing on load. So I closed out my RTSS and I am finally able to load the game.
So, I found the cause of the crash, I'm just not sure how to fix it. I need that RTSS to run my game. It's the only thing to keep fps capped (other than bandicam).
Thank you everyone for your help! :) I'm sure I got it from here, I just got to figure out how to get RTSS to play nice with Sims 3.
(sigh of relief) Finally, glad to hear we're (you're) getting someplace. Which version of RTSS do you have? If the older version 6.x isn't cutting it any longer, perhaps the newer stable 7.1 or the 7.2 beta will.

I had just updated to the 7.1.0 version, so I updated again to the 7.2 beta and so far, it's loading. It took me about 30 minutes to get RTSS uninstalled and updated, cause apparently - if you have the folder with the downloaded RTSS open - it will adort the installation process. Yeah, that took me a minute to figure out. lol
Now I can go into game, double check fps is capped and then see if I'm still having the lag issues. :)
Scratch that.... 7.2 is no better. Still crashing. Le sigh. I guess I'll just go back to bandicam to limit fps. I don't want to spend the whole day trouble shooting.

@SimplyJen I haven't checked Nvidia Inspector in a couple years, since it stopped working when I started playing windowed fullscreen with my duals. I will try though. I stopped messing with it for the night. I'll check the NCP, too. :) Thanks :)
I see a lot of people getting temperamental help from the various NVidia tools, I have continued to find that I do not need them to control FPS in TS3. My GPU is a Nvidia 1060 on my newish Cyberlink Laptop running on Win10 and v 1.67 of TS3. These tools were designed on the original disk version of TS3 that is on 1.67 or earlier. I use the following set up to limit FPS, as I have done for years on all my gaming desktops and the previous laptops I've used for TS3. On my machine(s)- 3Booter starts the game and calls a tiny program called FPSlimiter, which limits FPS to 30. It stable, it works in both windowed and full screen mod -- never fails or ever gets moody with GPU changes, windows updates, moon phases or changing hairstyles. * I don't play this game on Steam so I have no advice there. Steam users in the past have used an FPSlimiter that also works for Skyrim, or 3rd party limiter called D3DOverrider. I have no experience or confidence in the information about these.
The files to download are TWO. You need 3booter and fpslimit (I use zip). The latter zip has the executable and has the dlls you need to drop into the base game folder. Grab the files here: http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/samples/ts3/tools/ * 3booter-win.zip (file is dated 2011) * fpslimit.zip <-- I default to using zip but rar is fine. Note: fpslimit contains the 2 DLLs you need and the executable for FPS control for TS3 v. 1.67. (file is dated 2009)
Decompress them into the base game root folder - in the PROGRAM folder (not documents). A snap of my Win10 folder showing the files.
To start the game, put a shortcut to 3booter on your desktop or into your script file if you use one. Script file: Here's my script/batch file to start the game by clearing caches -- the extention for batch files is .BAT I call my batch file: TS3-Start.bat. Warning: You have to edit your own to be sure you have the correct locations of files for the script to run.

Start your game with this file, turn on the game's FPS checker, and it will stay around 30 fps all the time, windowed or fullscreen. I hope this helps someone.
@SemaviLady - Hi there. If there was warning up on your post about 3booter and the fpslimiter programs, I must be missing it. But in order to save others some time and heartache, these tools are said to not work on Patch 1.69, only on 1.67 and below. Not sure if they ever worked on Steam installs, in case that is relevant for anyone.
